Item Description: London, UK: George Allen & Unwin, 1977, 1st Edition, First Printing ( 1st State Dustjacket ), London, England, 1977. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine (see description). Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine (see description). J R R Tolkien cover Art (illustrator). First Edition. ----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy, in a Near Fine lightly rubbed dustjacket, some fading to blue on the upper edge of the text block as usually seen, jacket is now in a hi-quality mylar protector, --- as per Currey this is trhe first state as the dustjacket is unpriced being designed for the export market t (no price on the flap so each receiving country could price the book according to their currency), , as well, the printer's info on the copyright page is correct mentioning 11 on 12 point type and Clowes, black and red fold out map at rear is intact, black and red map facing page 121, ---published after JRRT's death this was edited by Tolkien's son Christopher with the uncredited assistance of Guy Gavriel Kay, ---contents include: Foreword; Ainulindale; Valaquenta; Quenta Silmarillion (The History of the Silmarils ); Akallabeth; Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age; Tables - genealogies ( House of Finwe / Descendants of Olwe and Elwe / House of Beor / House of Hador and The People of Haleth ) The Sundering of the Elves; Notes on Pronunciation; Index of Names; Appendix - Elements in Quenya and Sindarin names,---" The Silmarillion is the core of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing, a work whose origins stretch back to a time long before The Hobbit. -Tolkien considered The Silmarillion his most important work, and, though it was published last and posthumously, this great collection of tales and legends clearly sets the stage for all his other writing. The story of the creation of the world and of the First Age, this is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back and in whose events some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part. The three Silmarils were jewels created by Feanor, most gifted of the Elves. Within them was imprisoned the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor before the Trees themselves were destroyed by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. Thereafter, the unsullied Light of Valinor lived on only in the Silmarils, but they were seized by Morgoth and set in his crown, which was guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth. The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Feanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all their heroism, against the great Enemy. --This is the story of the First Age, the ancient drama to which characters in "The Lord of the Rings" look back. Very good near fine set, clean tight sound square, no bookplates, inscriptions or marks of any kind, firmly held in joints and hinges, clean crisp corners and edges. Like bound in very good bright gilt lettered and illustrated red cloth featuring embossed circular vignette title to each, the lightest of vertical creasing to ‘Towers’. Housed and protected in very good original unclipped [25s] colour pictorial matt beige dustwrappers, featuring The One Ring and Eye of Sauron illustration in red and gold, rubbed a little to head of spine ‘Fellowship’ and ‘Return’, ‘Fellowship’ with light indentation near upper joint and short scratch to centre spine, otherwise both boards and dustwrappers very good near fine. Great shelf presence with alternate red and black titles, top edge red. A great set of the seminal trilogy, in 1965 like bound later impressions of the 1st Edtition of 1957. Very good, with Tolkien’s line-drwawn coloured folding maps. A lovely addition to the library of reader, scholar and collector alike, now housed in removeable transparent Mylar wrappers. Expensive and heavy sets such as this will accrue substantial additional charges for safe postage including insurance and tracking. Bookseller Inventory # 100094363

Item Description: George Allen & Unwin, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A lovely fresh, First Edition set of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, comprising The Fellowship of the Ring (fourteenth impression, 1965), The Two Towers (eleventh impression, 1965) and The Return of the King (eleventh impression, 1965). A uniform and harmonious set, not a marriage of odd volumes. All three books are Fine, firmly bound in very clean and sharp red cloth, with unfaded red publisher topstains, and very bright, crisp and clean, with superb fold-out maps. The dustwrappers are presented in removable, archival-quality Brodart protective covers. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard.
