Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Allen and Unwin. all 1966 2nd edition, 1st printing. 1966 was the first printing of the second edition produced for copyright reasons for the Ballantine paperback license problem. They needed a new edition. The 1966 edition failed to make all the correction Professor Tolkien required and he insisted they re-print them immediately for 1967. Thereafter we see most of the key text changes and it remain as we see them today. Both the first and second printings are must-haves for any collection. They later printings were just re-prints and not as important as far as content corrections. This set is a mixed set, each title acquired separately so the wear is different on each book and jacket. FotR and RotK are very nice, TT could use a replacement jacket as all the edges are badly scuffed. All books are well read and worn, with TT having old damp spotting to cover. Overall, a very affordable set of the now rare first printings of the second edition.

  • 3 vols., 8vo., Second Edition, Second Impression, with 3 folding maps in red and black, inscriptions on front free endpapers; red cloth, gilt backs, red tops, an unusually bright, crisp set in dustwrapper (one wrapper price-clipped), the wrappers mildly age-soiled on (predominantly white) rear panels. FIRST REVISED EDITION. 'A number of errors and inconsistencies that still remained in the text have been corrected, and an attempt has been made to provide information on a few points which attentive readers have raised This edition offers this Foreword, an addition to the Prologue, some notes and an index of the names of persons and places' (Author's Foreword). Hammond A5.e.i; A5.e.ii; A5.e.iii respectively (recording the first impressions).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. llen and Unwin. all 1967 2nd edition, 2nd printing. 1966 was the first printing of the second edition, but they failed to make all the correction. Professor Tolkien required and he insisted, they re-print them immediately. They had to produce a second edition (new edition) in the first place following the copyright disputes over the ACE editions. Thereafter we see all the key text changes and it remain as we see them today other than correction of typoes. Both the first and second printings are must-haves for any collection. They later printings were just re-prints and not as important as far as content corrections. Note, the second printings do not have the correction tot he title errors on the jacket flaps, one of the ways to identify a true 1966 set. This set has some wear and "chipping" (ink comes off the jacket and you see the paper beneath) to the jacket edges and spines which is more obvious due to the dark grey color. Books are read several times but no serious flaws. They do have tasteful owners bookplates to each end page, but we don't consider this is a flaw or affects the vlaue. The overall condition is the most important factor to the value. As good as set as you'll find as the early second editions are now very scarce.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Fellowship 1962 twelfth impression two towers 1963 tenth return of the king 1955 second impression. Fellowship has a loose map and some small marks left from the previous map left on last page by board. It has some wear to internal binding but still holds ok and a few small stains and creases inside. It is in fair condition overall but not quite good. The return of the king is a ex-libris and has a stamp on the print-page. Saw a dog-eared page inside and some small stains but overall good condition internally. The binding has some wear up high and down low but binding still holds tight and probably sounds worse. The map on the return of the king is attached but has big yellow tape reinforcements. This has given a yellow colour on the board and the last page beside the map. The two towers has severe wear to the spine though the book is still firmly attached though. You can see this damage clearly in the pictures. The two towers map is in great condition though. The pages are fresh with a few small stains and some quite faint creases on around 20 pages. The pages are though in overall good condition. Very early set of the Lord of the rings which is scarce.

Red Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No dj. 8th, 4th, 4th Impression. Matching set from one owner, 8th imp, 1959, 4th imp, 1956 & 4th imp. 1958. No dust jackets, the red boards are tidy and clean with minor rubbing at spine bases, Fellowship has a strong corner bump at the top fore-corner, Return of the King has a strong bump at the base which has slightly split the cloth at one point, also minor corner bumps at rear fore-corners. Fellowship has name in ink on flyleaf, Towers has name in pencil, the last no inscriptions. Texts are generally nice and clean and free of markings, bindings tight. The fore-edges show minor thumbing, the top edges all red with Fellowship a strong red, the others less so, no indications of fade thereby. The owner had carefully excised the maps from the rear by cutting near the hinge, presumably to make it easier to follow the places on the stories. We have equally carefully re-inserted them with archive grade repair tape to stabilise the cuts. The cut edges match exactly so definitely the original maps which are in clean nice neatly folded condition. The owner had made a neat LOTR themed pocket for one map, which we are including. The gilt on the spines are Fellowship - bright, Towers - very dull, Return of the King - medium. Size: Royal 8vo.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is a lovely set of the highly sought-after fantasy classic in the first edition format, including the iconic "eye in the ring" motif. These are the 14th / 11th / 11th impressions, dating 1965 / 1965 / 1965. They are sharp cornered, have extremely bright clean gilt, do not have inscriptions and are good solid bindings. The maps are extremely clean and bright, again with no sign of handling. The classic grey dustwrappers are sharp and not price clipped, each showing a 25s price. All wrapper shave some yellowing and sunning / yellowing to spines, as per pictures, with The Return of the King having more yellowing across the front panel and with a delicate joint on the wrapper showing signs of starting to separate, but stabilised in a removable plastic sleeve. There is also some minor darker marking to the wrappers, and a short closed tear (2.5cm) to The Fellowship of the Ring front panel. Internally, these lovely volumes are all very clean. In all, these books present very well indeed. This is a collectable clean copy of the 1st ed format in original unclipped wrappers. In all, a superior set. A note about this edition: The value of the later printings in first edition format have steadily risen over the last decade as the contribution of Tolkien to culture and the scale of his achievement has been recognised. His work continues to inspire new generations of fantasy readers and watchers, and his books show no sign of dropping in people's estimations and continuing to climb in value.

Despite this, the book remains fully intact. The dust jacket has undergone professional repair, most extensively for this volume, including a full relining to ensure its durability and presentation. The Two Towers: This book is in good to very good condition, with its dust jacket showing moderate wear before undergoing professional repair to address chipping and minor losses. The fold-out map is present and in good condition. The Return of the King: Shows signs of wear to the dust jacket, including small tears and creases that have been professionally repaired. Inside, the pages are clean and the binding tight. The map is intact, displaying minimal wear at the folds. Additional Information: These editions were published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd in London, making this set a notable acquisition for collectors and enthusiasts. Notwithstanding the noted condition issues, particularly with "The Fellowship of the Ring," the set holds considerable collectible appeal due to the professional repairs made to preserve the dust jackets, especially the extensive work done on "The Fellowship of the Ring" to ensure its preservation and presentation. Ownership name inscription on upper pastedown of all volumes. Includes an adorable note written in Elvish by previous owner.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Allen and Unwin. 1962, 1963, 1963 Impressions 12, 10,10 This set is in much better condition overall, jacket colour is uniform. FotR jacket has a little more tattering to spine ends. Of 1st edition sets you are more or less buying jacket as far as the value, thus this set is priced higher. The photos provide the detail. Books are truly read once condition, all have the Foyles sticker, along with the uniform wear, indicating they were purchased together. Condition, Condition, Condition! As Tolkien book collecting grows in popularity, the availability of collectible/investment original condition books and jackets disappears. It is not just the printing/edition that matters to the value, but that serious collectors want only the best condition. Books with damaged jackets or even no jackets at all, are now increasing in price, driving up the price of complete and better condition copies. You could have a poor copy worth only £200 or a fine copy worth £5,000. That's how important condition is to value. You should always buy the best you can afford original jackets, early printing and very good or better. Unlike other genre?s, the market for Tolkien early editions is quite mature and well established. It is not a matter of waiting for a better copy to come along. There aren?t going to be any! There are no more hiding in the attic or charity shops. People sell off their more worn copies when they upgrade and now leave their collections to their children. We?ve been a specialist dealer for 20 years. Some examples that were plentiful just two years ago are now completely gone or only the dregs appear. As time goes on, you?ll pay more money, for less condition. First editions The Lord of the Rings and Hobbits remain the most in demand. If you like it, can afford it, then buy it while its available!.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: First Edition Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by George Allen & Unwin in 1955-1956. This set was originally owned by the renowned American professor in classical and medieval languages Charles Christopher Mierow (1883 1961), who played a significant role in part of the genesis of 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings'. Mierow's work, 'The Gothic History of Jordanes' (1908), meticulously documented the history of the Goths, tracing their origins from Scandinavia to their migration to the Black Sea region. It delves into the Gothic Wars, including their conflicts with the Huns. Tolkien drew inspiration from this book for his creation of orcs, drawing parallels with the Huns. Moreover, Mierow's book spurred Tolkien's interest in the Gothic language, which he utilized in crafting 'Qenya', the High-Elven tongue featured in 'The Lord of the Rings'. [See: 'The Rhetoric of History in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings', University of Pretoria, J.L. Painter 2015]. Following Charles Mierow's passing in 1961, the books embarked on a remarkable journey from the USA: Over thirty years ago, a Dutch student discovered the set in a small shop in Nepal. The circumstances surrounding how the books ended up in South Asia remain unknown, but it's clear that like Frodo Baggins in 'The Lord of the Rings', they undertook a very long journey. ------ About the books: The Fellowship of the Ring: 1956 first edition, FIFTH impression in fifth impression dust jacket. Notations 'Nov. 14, 1956,' and 'Charles C. Mierow, Colorado College,' written in a blue ink on the first free endpaper. Mierow also marked a passage in the margin of pages 136, 137, and 138 with a thin (approx. 1 cm) vertical blue line. -- The Two Towers: 1956 first edition, FOURTH impression in a third impression dust jacket (as issued). --- The Return of the King: 1956 first edition SECOND impression in a second impression dust jacket. --- Near fine set with undamaged bright red cloth covers. The gold gilt lettering on the spine is still bold. Binding firm, pages bright and clean. The price-clipped dust jackets have some fading towards the spine. The dust jacket of The Fellowship of the Ring has a few small tears and some brown spots on the back. The dust jacket of Return of the King has two small pencil marks on the back. Overall, a near fine set with a truly remarkable and captivating provenance.

In very good condition. "The Lord of the Rings began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 children's fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II in letters to his son, "and finally, having polished it to his own satisfaction, published it as a trilogy from 1954 to 1955, a volume at a time, impatiently awaited by a growing audience. It is considered one of this centuryâ s lasting contributions to that borderland of literature between youth and age. It seems destined to become this centuryâ s contribution to that select list of books which continue through the ages to be read by children and adults with almost equal pleasure." (Eyre, 134-35). It has went on to become the third best selling novel of all-time with 150 million copies sold.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Allen and Unwin. 1956, 56, 55 Impressions 5,4,2 A lovely first edition set. Dust jacket are grey rather than tan, mich is much closer to the original unfaded colour which is extremely rare. Uniform fading to jacket colours, but no tattering to the paper on spine ends as often found. There are tape marks to the flaps and lighter on the spines which is unfortunate, but can't be readily seen when displayed on your shelf. Owners name in all three books indicate they have stayed together as a set. Books have tape marks to end pages, but no other serious flaws, gilt bright, pages clean I have indicated in previous listings impressions 7,5,4 or 7, 4,3 in all probability could have been purchase as a set of three titles in the bookshop of the day, some with the first ever slipcases. Much less common, but equally probable is this 5,4,2 impressions which is the very earliest "production set" published in 56, with leftover 55 RotK you could have bought. The only way you could be sure, as in this case, the original owner signed all three books. We feel these very early, cherished sets are special having been purchased before Tolkien's works became so iconic. These early collectors were trend setters of the day. It's a lovely set.
