The set is housed in a custom full leather slipcase to show and protect. The set is in Near Fine condition, with small previous owners initials to the top corner of the front free endpaper, no other writing in the books. There are tape ghosts from the old style dustjacket protectors that have kept the dustjackets in beautiful condition, and also a mark to the flap of The Fellowship and The Two Towers, that may have been caused by the same tape, at least the position makes it appear that way. There is no foxing or offsetting in any of the books or to the endpapers as is common. The exterior cloth is clean and unmarked, with the gilt untarnished and bright. The books are clean and tight, and the maps are attached in each volume, and show no extra folds, but the first two have a minor tear at the mounting flap, now neatly repaired. About this Item: George Allen & Unwin, 1954. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A lovely fresh, First Edition set of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, comprising The Fellowship of the Ring (fourteenth impression, 1965), The Two Towers (eleventh impression, 1965) and The Return of the King (eleventh impression, 1965). A uniform and harmonious set, not a marriage of odd volumes. All three books are Fine, firmly bound in very clean and sharp red cloth, with unfaded red publisher topstains, and very bright, crisp and clean, with superb fold-out maps. Volumes one and two both have the briefest inscription to the ffep (‘Happy birthday 1965 / Margaret’) while volume three has some very light, sporadic spotting to the fore-edge of the page block. The unclipped dustwrappers (each stating ‘25s net’, and each bearing the correct printing statement) are Near Fine: crisp and clean with bright, unfaded lettering; a little toning to the spines and the very occasional minor mark; a tiny nick to the head of the rear spine fold of the Fellowship, otherwise excellent. The dustwrappers are presented in removable, archival-quality Brodart protective covers. All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. Postage within the United Kingdom is free; overseas shipping will require an additional shipping charge (to cost). All orders are sent very carefully wrapped in bubble wrap and sturdy cardboard. About this Item: George Allen and Unwin, London, 1956. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A lovely 1955 & 56 year set, average condition. Impressions 5th, 4th, & 3rd of the three books. 1956, 1956, 1957, These early impressions are increasingly hard to find without much more wear and tear. FotR jacket has a closed tear to cover seam and red color bleeding to the reverse of the jacket, but does no show thru. All three jackets have taterring to the spine ends. TT has a 3rd impression jacket, this is normal as leftover jackets were re-used. RotK has more wear, small ink staiin, with extensive tape on the reverse of the jacket seams. This was just to support it as they are not torn. Book covers clean with only the odd mark except for small damp stain to FotR, bindings tight, pages clean, no marks. This is an above average set all around given the age. As nice an early set as you will find without spending much more. Please ask for additional photos as this will show the condition better than a description. The box is worse for wear, but not seriously damaged. Seller Inventory # 001968

About this Item: George Allen and Unwin Ltd, London, 1955. Hardback. Condition: Near Fine/Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good/Near Fine. 1st Edition. This set includes one 1st impression - all 3 volumes are all in their original boards and unclipped dustjackets and are in unusually well preserved condition with bindings that are tight, sound and square; each with its map at rear crisp and fresh. Volume 1 "The Fellowship of the Ring" [5th impression 1956] is better than very good with red cloth very fresh looking and only a little dulling to gilt spine titles. Internally it remains clean and fresh with no inscriptions - just a little off-setting to endpapers. The jacket to this volume is near fine with just a hint of wear at edges only and the slightest tanning to spine. Volume 2 "The Two Towers" [9th impression 1962] is fine with very fresh cloth and titles; internally all clean and fresh with no inscriptions; the dustjacket is near fine with the slightest hint of tanning to rear panel and spine. Volume 3 "The Return of the King" [1st impression with "1955" at foot of title page and "First published in 1955" on copyright page] is fine inside and out with no inscriptions; it carries the number 4 at the bottom of page 49, the jacket is very good with very slight edge wear and the tiniest nicks at fold ends, the rear flap includes the brief review quotes. A really lovely fresh and clean set at a sensible price. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 001453
