Brock. 4to, beautifully bound and signed by Morrell in very fine full crimson crushed morocco. Very fine red marbled endpapers, a silk ribbon marker and vivid gilding to all edges finish off this most impressive binding. x, 520 pp. A most handsome and superb copy, the text and plates in very fine condition, the beautiful Morrell binding in a perfect state of preservation. FIRST PRINTING OF THE FINE DULVERTON EDITION IN A VERY HANDSOME FULL BINDING GILT, SIGNED BY MORRELL. ARGUABLY THE FINEST FORMAT OF THIS BELOVED TALE. Brittan’s and Brock's lovely paintings display a superb combination of artistic talents, the typeset is easy to the eyes and the stunning Morrell binding all combine to make this truly an heirloom to be treasured. Lorna Doone has become a timeless classic, though Blackmore originally had much difficulty in having it published. Almost from the beginning it received great acclaim by many of Blackmore's contemporaries including Robert Louis Stevenson, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Thomas Hardy, and Margaret Oliphant. Blackmore combined elements of romance with those of the historical novels popularized by Sir Walter Scott. The basis for his historical understanding is traced to Macaulay's History of England and the analysis on the Monmouth rebellion. Bookseller Inventory # 26818

Item Description: Sampson Low, Son, & Marston,, London:, 1869. First edition.. Pagination: vi, 332, iv, 340, iv, 342p. Three volumes. Rebacked in modern calf with gilt rules, black title labels, new marbled boards, contemporary corners with some rubbing. First volume with inner margin of title page slightly opened, but recently rebacked so no affect, tiny scuff at outer margin of title, couple of foxing spots to inner margin of last few leaves, and top corner of last blank with corner tear, no affect. Volume two with tiny clean tear to outer margin of p71, no affect. Volume three with few tiny foxing spots. Overall an excellent set in new binding. Lacks publishers ads at end, not uncommon. Very rare. Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900), considered one of the greatest and most famous English novelists of the second half of the nineteenth century. He won acclaim for his vivid descriptions and personification of nature and settings in his works. He was a pioneer to the new romantic movement in fiction that continued with Robert Luis Stevenson and others. Though very popular in his time, Blackmore?s work has been largely ignored since, and other than his magnum opus, Lorna Doone, most all his works have gone out of publication. Due to difficulty finding a publisher, Blackmore?s Lorna Doone first edition of 1869 was limited to a printing of only 500 copies, of which only 300 sold. The following year it was republished in a one-volume edition and became a huge success. It has since, never been out of print. There have been more than ten movies inspired by the book and numerous television programs, as well as songs and other artistic works. Citations: Sadleir 227. Wolff 536. Bookseller Inventory # 20234

Item Description: Sampson Low, Marston and Company, London, 1900. Lynton Edition. Lynton Edition. Photogravure frontispiece portrait of the author, wood-engraved illustrations by F. Armstrong, W. Small, and W.H.J. Boot. xvi; 527, [1]pp. 4to. Inscribed by Swinburne to His Cousin. Inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Mary C.J. Leith, from her affectionate cousin, A.C. Swinburne. April 1908."An evocative association copy - Mary C. J. Leith (ca. 1840-1926, née Gordon) was Swinburne's cousin and they were close during their childhood. Swinburne was apparently devastated when it was announced that Gordon was to marry Robert W. Disney Leith, which she did in 1865. The enduring relationship between John Ridd and Lorna Doone, established when the former was 12, would have resonated with Swinburne, and perhaps he hoped to remind his cousin of their own shared childhood with the gift of this book. Provenance: Algernon Charles Swinburne (gift inscription to cousin Mary Charlotte Julia Leith) Contemporary vellum, upper cover and spine blocked in red and dark brown, t.e.g. Light soiling, two marks to spine Photogravure frontispiece portrait of the author, wood-engraved illustrations by F. Armstrong, W. Small, and W.H.J. Boot. xvi; 527, [1]pp. 4to. Bookseller Inventory # 267410

Item Description: New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1891, 1891. 3 volumes, octavo. Bound in mid 20th-century blue half calf, marbled sides, titles to spines and boards gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Spines a touch sunned, internally fresh; an excellent set. An attractively bound later edition of R. D. Blackmore's classic romance, inspired by the legends of North Devon and Somerset associated with Exmoor. It was initially published in a three-volume edition to little acclaim in 1869, but the one-volume edition issued the following year quickly sold out, ensuring the author's subsequent fame. The novel, notable for its use of local dialect and sometimes archaic language, and which has been the basis for seven film versions and three BBC adaptations, has been continuously in print since publication. (117x168mm), frontispiece, pp: iv&517[1], including a leaf of Preface & 2pp Contents listing the lxxv (75) chapters, green endpapers with owner inscription to front free endpaper, one leaf of text browned, corner of Contents excised without loss of text & Preface with closed tear, otherwise contents very good, bound in half tan polished calf, gilt, red marbled boards, spine gilt ruled with red leather title label lettered 'Lorna Doone', loss of leather to lower corner piece of front board & worn hole to lower front hinge at tail of spine, otherwise sound & very good. The first edition of what was to become his most famous novel was published as a three volume edition, but it sold poorly. 500 copies were printed; only 300 were sold. The remaining 200 were sent to Australia. The publication of the second edition, as a single volume, coincided with the announcement of the engagement of the Marquess of Lorne to Queen Victoria's daughter Louise. When runours spread that the book was about the Marquess' family, its popularity soared. Blackmore wrote subsequently, 'It is the merest fluke that Lorna Doone was ever heard of any more". This is the 2nd edition of which only the National Trust copy found in Copac & Worldcat. For some reason this 2nd edition is very scarce, possibly Mr. Sampson Low printed new editions to capitalise on it's unexpected success after the initial print run of the second edition in October 1870 and the marriage in March 1871. The favourable reviews in November 1870 & January 1871 may well have sent him back to the presses. Bookseller Inventory # 698

Item Description: John C. Winston N.D., New York. Hardcover. Book Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Included. Unusual to find these cloth over waxed paper dustjackets from the late 19th century. In this case, they have done their job well--the books are in excellent condition. This is a 2 volume set, not dated but circa late 1880s (Volume I contains the 20th Edition Preface, dated 1882, but this set may just be printed from the 1882 plates). Very beautiful dark red cloth bindings with elaborate art nouveau type gilt decorations on the spine and front binding panel, & also binding printing, ribbon place markers (which are somewhat faded), and gilt upper page edges. Dark red cloth over waxed paper dustjackets for both volumes, undecorated except for gilt printing on the spines. Numerous B&W full page illustrations with tissue guards intact, some by Dr. Charles L. Mitchell, some by F. Frith & Co. of England, and photogravures by A. W. Elson & Co. The books are both near fine (previous owner's inscription in Volume I and name in Volume II), just a bit of lower binding shelfwear, but clean, straight, tight and with all gilt intact), in very good plus dustjackets (a few smudges and a touch of edge wear & fraying, flap corners clipped. Really a lovely set.; Vol. 2 vol. Bookseller Inventory # 7593
