Item Description: Sampson Low, Marston and Company, London, 1900. Lynton Edition. Lynton Edition. Photogravure frontispiece portrait of the author, wood-engraved illustrations by F. Armstrong, W. Small, and W.H.J. Boot. xvi; 527, [1]pp. 4to. Inscribed by Swinburne to His Cousin. Inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Mary C.J. Leith, from her affectionate cousin, A.C. Swinburne. April 1908."An evocative association copy - Mary C. J. Leith (ca. 1840-1926, née Gordon) was Swinburne's cousin and they were close during their childhood. Swinburne was apparently devastated when it was announced that Gordon was to marry Robert W. Disney Leith, which she did in 1865. The enduring relationship between John Ridd and Lorna Doone, established when the former was 12, would have resonated with Swinburne, and perhaps he hoped to remind his cousin of their own shared childhood with the gift of this book. Provenance: Algernon Charles Swinburne (gift inscription to cousin Mary Charlotte Julia Leith) Contemporary vellum, upper cover and spine blocked in red and dark brown, t.e.g. Light soiling, two marks to spine Photogravure frontispiece portrait of the author, wood-engraved illustrations by F. Item Description: London Sampson Low, Marston and Co.,LTD. n.d. First Printing of the handsome Dulverton Edition with coloured illustrations prepared especially for this work. With 16 fine colour plates, including 12 landscapes of the region by Charles E. Brittan and 4 figurative subjects depicting scenes from the story by Charles E. Brock. 4to, beautifully bound and signed by Morrell in very fine full crimson crushed morocco. The covers are decorated with roll tooled interlacing borders in gilt with fine floral corner-pieces and with beautifully gilt-tooled turn-ins and edges, the spine delicately gilt decorated with floral tools in the corners of gilt frames within the compartments between gilt stippled raised bands, two compartments with green morocco labels bordered and lettered in gilt. Very fine red marbled endpapers, a silk ribbon marker and vivid gilding to all edges finish off this most impressive binding. x, 520 pp. A most handsome and superb copy, the text and plates in very fine condition, the beautiful Morrell binding in a perfect state of preservation. FIRST PRINTING OF THE FINE DULVERTON EDITION IN A VERY HANDSOME FULL BINDING GILT, SIGNED BY MORRELL. ARGUABLY THE FINEST FORMAT OF THIS BELOVED TALE. Brittan’s and Brock's lovely paintings display a superb combination of artistic talents, the typeset is easy to the eyes and the stunning Morrell binding all combine to make this truly an heirloom to be treasured. Lorna Doone has become a timeless classic, though Blackmore originally had much difficulty in having it published. Almost from the beginning it received great acclaim by many of Blackmore's contemporaries including Robert Louis Stevenson, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Thomas Hardy, and Margaret Oliphant. Blackmore combined elements of romance with those of the historical novels popularized by Sir Walter Scott. The basis for his historical understanding is traced to Macaulay's History of England and the analysis on the Monmouth rebellion. Bookseller Inventory # 26818

Item Description: London: Sampson Low, Son, & Marston, 1869, 1869. 3 volumes, octavo. Original blue watered cloth lettered in gilt on spines (Carter's A binding), sides blocked in blind with thick one-line rule enclosing two-line rule, pale yellow coated endpapers. Each housed in a blue cloth chemise and all in a blue morocco-backed bookform slipcase. Bookplate of Augustine Birrell to lower outer corner of front pastedown in each volume, together with the pencilled ownership inscription of one E. King and his monogram bookplate EK to the centre. Autograph letters signed by Blackmore tipped-in to vol. I initial blank, with autograph envelope laid in. Spines faded and a little cockled in places, joints and extremities rubbed, covers lightly rubbed and marked suggesting skilful removal of library labels, clean within, and overall in very good condition. First edition, first impression of Blackmore's most famous novel, first issue with the adverts in the third volume correctly dated March 1869; one of only 500 copies printed, this copy with two tipped-in autograph letters signed by Blackmore to the book and manuscript dealers J. Pearson & Co, 5 Pall Mall Place, London SW. The first (Teddington, 25 April 1892) declines a request to sell the original manuscript of Lorna Doone, but expresses a willingness to consider offers for Alice Lorraine (1875) "by reason of heavy losses in the gardening way". The second letter (9 August 1892) reveals that Pearson attempted but failed to sell the manuscript of Blackmore's novel Cripps, the Carrier (1876); Blackmore thanks them for its safe return, and promises to consider offering them Lorna Doone in due course. (Pearson ceased trading by 1924, when their stock was sold off at Sotheby's. The manuscript of Lorna Doone is now in the Huntington Library.) To the lower outer corner of each front pastedown is a bookplate monogrammed AB and with the Latn motto "otium sine literis mors est" ("leisure without books is death"). This is the bookplate of noted essayist and Liberal politician Augustine Birrell (1850-1933), whose "witty and elegant essays on writers he admired, such as Milton, Pope, Carlyle, and Dr Johnson, revealed his passion for literature and his intellectual versatility. He had collected more than 10,000 books for his library by the time he was fifty, observing in his essay 'Book-buying' that 'the man who has a library of his own collection is able to contemplate himself objectively'" (ODNB). His political reputation today rests on his achievements as chief secretary for Ireland in the first six years of his tenure, from 1907 to 1912, though he became increasingly ineffective after the introduction of the Home Rule Bill and took full blame for the Easter Rising in his resignation speech to the House of Commons in May 1916.
