Item Description: (circa 1911), 1911. The only existing portrait of Professor Challenger hand-drawn by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Measuring approximately 8 x 6", but irregularly shaped, with the left top edge cut in an arc; lined notebook paper; and is captioned by his wife, Lady Jean Conan Doyle, "Arthur drew this (1913) as an idea of his conception of Challenger." Foxed; marginal tears; very good. Lady Conan Doyle is mistaken regarding the date of this drawing as she started annotating some of Doyle papers in the 1930s after her husbandÕs passing. Undoubtedly, it dates from two years earlier, when Doyle was writing The Lost World. This drawing bears a striking resemblance to the illustrations drawn by Harry Rountree for the bookÕs serialization in The Strand Magazine and possibly it was shown to him by Doyle. At the time of the writing of The Lost World, Doyle was enjoying one of the happiest periods in his life. More than any other book in his career, Doyle enthusiastically went to great lengths to help produce and promote The Lost World. He even had himself made-up as Professor Challenger for the mock photograph that appears as the frontispiece in the first edition and another pose of Doyle as Challenger was stamped in gilt on the front cover cloth. This drawing has an impeccable provenance. It was first made known to the public by John Dickson Carr in his 1949 authorized biography of Doyle, when Carr listed this drawing in his printed inventory of the Conan Doyle papers in the possession of the family. The drawing remained in the family for over 90 years until it was sold at ChristieÕs London among the Doyle papers offered by the estate of Anna Conan Doyle. The drawing captures well the massive image of Professor Challenger as Doyle as him make his first appearance in The Lost World: ÒAs I entered, his seat spun round to face me. His appearance made me gasp. I was prepared for something strange, but not for so overpowering a personality as this. It was his size which took one's breath away--his size and his imposing presence. His head was enormous, the largest I have ever seen upon a human being. I am sure that his top-hat, had I ever ventured to don it, would have slipped over me entirely and rested on my shoulders. He had the face and beard which I associate with an Assyrian bull; the former florid, the latter so black as almost to have a suspicion of blue, spade-shaped and rippling down over his chest. The hair was peculiar, plastered down in front in a long, curving wisp over his massive forehead. The eyes were blue-gray under great black tufts, very clear, very critical, and very masterful. A huge spread of shoulders and a chest like a barrel were the other parts of him which appeared above the table, save for two enormous hands covered with long black hair. This and a bellowing, roaring, rumbling voice made up my first impression of the notorious Professor Challenger.Ó. Bookseller Inventory # 13571J

Item Description: London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1914]., 1914. NEAR-FINE FIRST EDITION IN LARGE PAPER, SCARCE. Tall Octavo, pp. 319. With mounted illustrations and colour frontispiece unique to this edition. This is the first issue, bound in light blue gilt-decorated cloth, with blind-stamped dinosaur print to covers, and illustrated endpapers. Internally clean, spine sunned, short frayed tear to crown (neatly laid down). A presentable and inexpensive example. Of the 1000 copies printed, just 190 were bound in the blue cloth; this was followed by a run of 810 in brown. With 13 mounted plates in colour, and in black and white, with two maps. This is the second issue of the 'large paper' edition, featuring colour frontis and other illustrations not present in the trade edition. All the plates are mounted for this version of the text. Item Description: 1912. and wrinkled (illustrator). Being an account of the recent amazing adventures of Professor George E. Challenger. London New York Toronto: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [1912]. Original bright red cloth decorated in gilt and white. First Edition, colonial issue, of Doyle's first Professor Challenger science fiction tale. The exploring party ventures to a lost plateau deep in the South American jungle, where dinosaurs still reign. Both the movie "Jurassic Park" and the television series "The Lost World" owe much to this book. Subsequently, Doyle wrote two more Professor Challenger novels -- THE POISON BELT (1913) and THE LAND OF MIST (1926) -- as well as two shorter Challenger tales that appeared in THE MARACOT DEEP (1929).~According to G&G, on 15 October 1912 Hodder & Stoughton issued 10,716 domestic copies (in dark blue cloth) plus 5,457 colonial copies (in this bright red cloth); a month or two later some more colonial copies were issued in paper covers, but these have "Second Edition" on the title page. These red-cloth colonial copies are identical in content to the blue-cloth domestic copies (neither was equipped with a half-title); in addition to the difference in color, the red cloth has more texture than the blue cloth, and the colonial copy has a gilt rosette at the foot of the spine, below the publisher's imprint.~This is a near-fine copy, with scarcely any wear but with the red spine slightly wrinkled and (as one would expect with this color) slightly faded. The thick wove paper is free of foxing, which is surprising for books sent by sea to such remote destinations as New Zealand and South Africa. The front endpaper bears an "Xmas 1912" inscription. Although there were half as many colonial copies issued as domestic, it is safe to say that today one sees 50 domestic copies for every one colonial copy. Green & Gibson A37b. Item Description: George Newnes Ltd., London, 1912. hb. black-&-white illustrations (illustrator). 8vo, Both volumes show minor rubbing to extremities. Contents sl. shaken, but hinges & joints tight. Overall, very good condition. This is the complete, first appearance in print, of the famous fantasy novel, wherein the character of Prof. George Challenger is first introduced. Published in monthly parts, as the leader in the Strand Magazine, by George Newnes, Ltd., London, commencing in April, 1912, and then in consecutive monthly parts until November, 1912. The extraordinary illustrations are by Harry Rountree and the "late Maple White" [actually ACD, using his own faked photos]. Some of these illustrations are unique to this issue. The first book edition appeared in October of the same year under the imprint of British publisher Hodder & Stoughton. A General Index precedes volume I. Both volumes have individual monthly Tables of Contents. The first volume contains pp. 363 to 720 of volume XLIII, and pp. 1 to 120 of volume XLIV. The second volume contains pp. 123 to 600 of volume XLIV. G&G A34. The complete text of each issue is included; thus many other notable stories are also set out: by P. G. Wodehouse, Morley Roberts, "Ouida", E. Phillips Oppenheim and others. The stitching of both volumes has been stressed a bit, as from being opened carelessly, but there are no loose pages, or signatures. Two volume set bound in maroon "pebbled" buckram with gilt rules. Item Description: 1912. Being an account of the recent amazing adventures of Professor George E. Challenger. London New York Toronto: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d. [1912]. Original dark blue cloth decorated in gilt and white. First Edition of Doyle's first Professor Challenger science fiction tale. The exploring party ventures to a lost plateau deep in the South American jungle, where dinosaurs still reign. Both the movie "Jurassic Park" and the television series "The Lost World" owe much to this book. Subsequently, Doyle wrote two more Professor Challenger novels -- THE POISON BELT (1913) and THE LAND OF MIST (1926) -- as well as two shorter Challenger tales that appeared in THE MARACOT DEEP (1929).~This was one of Doyle's favorite books; he based the character and appearance of Professor Challenger partly upon Professor Rutherford (whom he had known at Edinburgh University) and partly upon himself. In fact, the frontispiece photograph of the explorers includes Doyle himself, disguised with bushy beard and eyebrows as Challenger -- looking rather like a Neanderthal, actually. Also, in addition to various illustrations that were copied from the 1905 book EXTINCT ANIMALS (showing dinosaurs in their surroundings), there are two photographs of the "lost plateau" that Doyle himself faked, as with the frontispiece.~This is a near-fine copy of a book quite difficult to find in desirable condition. Typically the white border on the front cover is largely worn away, but on this copy it is still mostly present (and the white lettering is entirely unaffected). The spine gilt is bright, and there is essentially none of the usual foxing on the leaves within (just a little on the page edges). THE LOST WORLD is often regarded as Doyle science fiction at its best. Green & Gibson A37a. Bookseller Inventory # 13952

Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 800. Bookseller Inventory # 125805
