Item Description: Louis Allis Co., Milwaukee, WI, 1941. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. There are nine issues of "The Louis Allis Messenger" magazine HARDBOUND into a beautiful green cloth volume with extra hard boards and 1/2" beveled edges, gilt print on the front says only "The riches we impart / are the only wealth / we shall always retain." (Three lines); the spine has five sets of double gilt bands with single gilt bands at the top and bottom; between the first two sets of double bands is a red leather glued-on title block that says "Picture Book"; endpapers are of heavy blue-green linen paper; frontispiece is a color picture of the Capitol building with the U.S. Navy flag on the back with the "E" symbol pennant flying below it, also in color (on glossy cover stock). "The Louis Allis Messenger" is printed at the bottom of the Capitol picture, but with no date or other information, so I assume this was a special Navy edition. This is followed by 24 pages on glossy white paper, fully illustrated with black drawings, as follows: the first page has the meaning of the U.S. Navy "E" symbol (efficiency, excellence and achievement), an honor that was, until recently, bestowed only within the Navy itself, but that with the current emphasis on production for the National Defense, has been awarded to certain manufacturing plants for swift production of armaments; the final statement being: "We are proud to be the first manufacturer of electric motors to be awarded this honor by the Navy." The remaining 23 pages of this illustrated section are a history of the U.S. from America's first settlers at Plymouth rock, the first Thanksgiving, the Revolutionary War, Lewis & Clark's exploration of the west, on through the Civil War, to modern farming and manufacturing, with the final page being political drawings and "For Victory Buy United States Savings Bonds and Stamps"; back cover is a color photo of the Washington Monument. The second issue bound in is the regular magazine dated March & April, 1941; followed by the May & June, 1948 issue; the March & April, 1949 issue; the March & April, 1950 issue; (the next issue is undated or else two issues have been combined); then the January & February, 1949; January & February, 1950, then July & August, 1942, which is dedicated to the U.S. Marines. There appear to be nine issues bound into the hard covers; each having patriotic, sentimental, folksy themes with beautiful full-color photographs and drawings, poems, paintings, etc. Some of the text is printed on card stock even heavier than the individual magazine covers, so it is hard to tell where each issue begins and ends without a thorough perusal. The book is in excellent condition, with mildly rubbed spine ends and edges; text has a few very mild stains/spots, with is otherwise unmarked and in excellent condition. I don't know whether or not this is one-of-a-kind, or if other issues were bound. It is, at any rate, a wonderful piece of Americana. Book weighs almost 5 lbs. ***HEAVY BOOK*** REQUIRES EXTRA POSTAGE FOR OTHER THAN U. S. MEDIA MAIL*** Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory # PER04432
