About this Item: New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1951., 1951. First edition (as stated upon copyright page) SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. 304 pages. Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 15.5cm. Dust jacket rubbed with nicks and short tears at edges, light fading to spine panel, toning and soiling to white rear panel, top corner of front flap is price-clipped. Aquamarine cloth with bright gilt stamping. Some soiling to edges with light stains on fore-edge. Interior pages remain clean. A very good copy in a very good- dust jacket with Strode's ink signature upon the half-title page. Although best known for his three-volume biography (with a fourth volume of letters) of Jefferson Davis, Hudson Strode (1892-1976) was a noted author of travel literature and a professor of creative writing at The University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa where he taught from 1916 to 1963. With graduate degrees from Columbia and Harvard, Strode achieved a full professorship at Alabama's Department of English in 1924 and became one of the most prominent faculty members at Alabama where his creative writing classes were renowned for producing successful authors.
