CLIP - Mr. Dornan was a farmer who had learned his songs from his father. As a boy, young Angelo spent enraptured hours as his father unfolded his narratives in song, which fortunately lingered in his memory. In his father's day, time at certain seasons of the year was of little consequence, and the longer a song provided entertainment the better. Thus the singing of many verses received encouragement; one song, "The True Lovers' Discoursion" (p. 87), took 20 minutes to sing, a feat father and son performed wi thout a text to guide them. Not all his father's songs were so well remembered; in some the words are fragmentary. But the music presented no problem, and each song, however short, has its individual tone. These melodies are of particular interest because Angelo Dornan, like his father before him, embroidered with great skill the already beautiful tunes. His friend Mr. Ireland, the blacksmith. Also had this gift, although his themes usually turned to murde r and other tragedies. Mr. Dornan sang mostly of love as it is proposed, plighted, rejected, and bereaved. Other subjects found in this collection are the dramatic events of seven Child ballads, songs of the supernatural and of humour, as well as topical songs. Unlike singers in the Miramichi district of northeastern New Brunswick, there is little evidence of original composition among these singers of British descent in the south. The situation may not be the same with the Acadians, many of whom live in the so utheastern part of the province, and no study of the area would be complete without them. Collectors more competent in French than I have taken many songs from this region. Information concerning them may be obtained from the National Museum of Man in Ot tawa, Laval University, and universities in New Brunswick. Bookseller Inventory # 009941

Item Description: Reprise, 1981. Record. First Edition; First Printing. Very Good. "Released in 1981, REACTOR was a transitional album for Neil Young, most notably in that it marked a break in his longstanding relationship with Reprise Records. But before Young left for the supposedly greener fields of Geffen, he unleashed this amped-up outing with Crazy Horse in tow. "Opera Star," with its refrain of "ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho" and unusual synthesizer backing, sets a quirky tone that's furthered by "T-Bone," a nine-minute guitar workout with lyrics comprised only of the lines "Got mashed potatoes/Ain't got no T-bone." On other tracks, however, the iconic rocker leaves blatant eccentricities behind; "Southern Pacific" rolls along vintage Young rails, while the fierce "Shots," with its distorted, industrial sounds, closes the album on its most energetic and glorious moment.". Item Description: Pathe. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Not a book but a vinyl record. This 10-inch (25 cm.) 33-1/3 rpm record, "Longue Duree Microsillon," was made in France by Pathe and is coded "XPT 276 / 33 ST 1034," followed by an "S" in a circle, which appears to stand for "Standard," NOT "Stereo." Disc is near mint. Offers Mr. Romans' own "Serenade Mediterraneenne," as well as "Vaya Con Dios," "Rapsodie Suedoise," "La Fete Du Tabac," etc. Jacket split an inch and a half at outer bottom corner. Bottom two inches of jacket was damp at some point, though it shows little wear and retains most of its original gloss; we'll grade jacket "very good." Vertically across the white keyboard design is inscribed, in English, "To Lonesome" (though could be a more unlikely "Lonetoue") "my best wishes and my friendship forever. / Alain Roman." The words "best", "friend-", and the last three letters of "Roman" are blurred due to edge of jacket having once been damp, but remain legible. At upper right corner in a different hand previous owner has written "Taped 19 Aug. 92 Both Sides," though if European that date could be "72." Romans was bandleader and pianist for Josephine Baker in Paris in the 1920s and '30s, and recorded the soundtrack (solo piano) to Jacques Tati's classic film "Mr. Hulot's Holiday" in 1953 -- though Tati replaced the original piano score with a jazz combo in re-editing the film a decade later. This would be a $50 disc without signature. This is a vinyl 10-inch LP monaural (mono) record, not a book. Reduced from $77. Inscribed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 001366
