Item Description: Doubleday & Company, New York, 1954. Handsomely bound in finely woven reddish-brown cloth stamped brighty in white on the spine. Very clean and tight throughout; virtually unread. In a dust jacket designed by Edward Gorey with the original price of $3.50 at the top of the inside front flap. With a 1" x 1" piece missing at the top of the spine which is darkened. Wear along the edges and at the corners. Chips at the bottom ends of the spine and at the corners. A few numbers and a name in ink at the bottom of the white section of the dust jacket's front panel. Lucky Jim is a novel by Kingsley Amis, published in 1954 by Victor Gollancz. It is Amis' first novel and won the Somerset Maugham Award for fiction. Set sometime around 1950, Lucky Jim follows the exploits of the eponymous James (Jim) Dixon, a reluctant medieval history lecturer at an unnamed provincial English university. The tone is often truculent and plain-spoken, but its diction and style are wide-ranging and finely modulated. The novel pioneers the characteristic subject matter of the time: a young man making his way in a post-war world that combines new and moribund attitudes. Item Description: Doubleday, Garden City, NY, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Edward Gorey - Jacket Design (illustrator). 1st Edition. First US edition, first printing of the author's noted first book - a comic novel set in Academia. A near fine book with a short (less than 1/4") closed tear to the cloth at the upper spine tip, but with clean, unfaded rust brown cloth covers, sharp corners and a clean interior (no foxing, offsetting or marking to the endsheets, pastedowns or anywhere else). There is a 1" closed tear on the lower edge of the rear end sheet. The Edward Gorey designed jacket is very good with less wear than average (bit of rubbing and one tiny chip to the upper spine tip, but the spine is quite sun-browned as well as are the folds, to a lesser extent). The front panel is mostly quite bright and there is some light tanning and a touch of dustsoiling to the rear panel. Photos cheerfully sent on request!. Bookseller Inventory # 134

Jacket is Very Good indeed, with toning to spine panel and tiny stains to lower edge of verso. Item Description: Doubleday, Garden City, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine-. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine-. First Printing. First American Edition, in the superb Edward Gorey dust jacket, one of his first and finest. 8vo: 256pp. Publisher's brown cloth, spine lettered in white, illustrated dust jacket priced $3.50. About Fine (end leaves lightly offset), apparently unread, jacket about Fine (spine toned, as often), but an excellent example. From the collection of bibliophile Donald Kaufmann. Amis's first novel, which received the Somerset Maugham Award for fiction. "Widely acknowledged as the quintessential campus novel of the twentieth century. As a central figure in the Angry Young Man movement during the 1950s, Amis utilizes comedy in the novel as a means for delivering his satiric attacks on the university community. His narrative is especially critical of those privileged individuals who endeavor to maintain the academic status quo in their favor through the exploitation of junior colleagues and, ultimately, through the threat of expulsion from the seemingly sacred groves of campus life." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory # BB1629
