Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition, Sixth Printing. Perhaps best known for his fictional biographies of Sherlock Holmes ("Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street") and Nero Wolfe ("Nero Wolfe of 35th Street, The World's Largest Private Detective"), the late Time Magazine editor, was also author of a history of nursery rhymes and this delightful, sometimes bawdy history of limericks, illustrated with black & white reproductions of drawings by Aubrey Beardsley, Edward Lear, and Andre Domin. 5 5/8" tall x 8 3/8" wide; brown paper-covered boards with gold lettering; 246 pages, including a bibliography. A tiny tear on the fold at the top of the spine, o/w boards show only mild edgewear and lightly-bumped spine ends. The text is very slightly age-tanned at the edges with pages 57 and 75 showing small marginal tears. As is common with books with a "wider than tall" format, the dustjacket is missing. A decent reading/study copy.
