Item Description: Harr Wagner Publishing Company, San Francisco, CA, 1924. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Photographs; SIGNED EDITION. This book is in Very Good to Near Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The book covers have some ground-in dirt and water spotting, The text pages are mostly clean and bright. There is some tidemarking and foxing to the edges of the text pages. The front pastedown page includes a previous owner's inked name and book number. This copy has been signed with a personal notation on the first free page by the author. The book is a production, including musical interludes, which gives the biography of Luther Burbank - the California based horticulturalist. This is a strange little number, a paen, with musical tribute to the man who was both a plant lover and innovator, and the man who wrote a little treatise on how to teach children (The Training of the Human Plant). The author has received a foreword by the great man himself. "An entertainment, or program with the Burbank Songs, and reading from the book "The Plant Lover", gives opportunity for infinite variety in action and costuming." "Luther Burbank (March 7, 1849 – April 11, 1926) was an American botanist, horticulturist and pioneer in agricultural science. He developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his 55-year career. Burbank's varied creations included fruits, flowers, grains, grasses, and vegetables. He developed (but did not create) a spineless cactus (useful for cattle-feed) and the plumcot." ; Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # A34181

Item Description: Luther Burbank Press, New York, 1915. Hardcover. Edited by John Whitson, Robert John and Henry Smith Williams. Complete 12-volume set. Small 4to. Textured green silk-like cloth with gilt spine lettering and oval portrait tipped to each front board surrounded by gilt. 302pp, (6pp); 302pp, (6pp); 303pp, (5pp); 302pp, (6pp); 302pp, (5pp); 303pp, (5pp); 302pp, (7pp); 303pp, (5pp); 303pp, (5pp); 302pp, (7pp); 303pp, (6pp); 308pp. Color tipped-in frontispieces, numerous tipped-in color plates. Very good overall. Mildly edgeworn, with spines uniformly sunned, though spine gilt lettering bright and nice. A tight, nice first edition of this massive compilation of Burbank's work -- this set with a decorative "Dedicated to" leaf tipped into the first volume, hand calligraphed in ornate Gothic to note that WILLIAM F. McCAUGHEY is an Honorary Member and boldly signed by this set's co-editor and Burbank Society secretary, Robert John. McCaughey (1893-1961) was a noted Chicago-area architect, a pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright and partner in a Park Ridge firm that, among other buildings, designed Park Ridge's celebrated Pickwick Theatre in the 1920s. Discreet ex-library, the only markings being a faint abrasion on each front pastedown and faint abrasion near the tail of each spine. Each inner flyleaf bears a large, pale green inkstamped ownership inkstamp of McCaughey's son. A lovely and scarce set, signed by one of its editors and from the collection of a noted architect. Item Description: Luther Burbank Press, 1914. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is one of the most beautiful modern collections of color photographs combined with scientific knowledge ever produced. SIGNED "Robert John" Secretary on the Dedication page to George B. McDowell, Honorary Member. This collection was initially sold by subscription to members of the Society, though there were hints of corruption on behalf of the Society leaders during the publication (at least six editors were involved in their publication). 6" x 9.18" with 105 color photographs tipped into each volume, for a total of 1260 photographs. The photos were produced with a new, special process (detailed in Vol I) and provide an extensive record of Burbank's work in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol from 1875 to 1914. Brilliant Top edge gilt, fore edge and bottom edge are uncut, many pages are still sealed, uncut, indicating a set which has never been read. There is some scuffing on most of the cover photos of Burbank as it is a raised photo and rubbed the back of its neighbor for many years on the shelf. Bindings are all still in tact and tight with only Vol. 1 being a little loose as likely the only volume which was occasionally taken down off the shelf. All volumes have some sunning on the spine, this is less noticeable on Vol II & III which are likely orphan members of the set. A few volumes have an occasional toning, a couple with disparate tide marks. All considered, a great set of attractive, fun books for the "budding" horticulturist or anyone with a few hours to spend reading in front of the fireplace.Luther Burbank (March 7, 1849 - April 11, 1926) was an American botanist, horticulturist and pioneer in agricultural science. He developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his 55-year career. Burbank's varied creations included fruits, flowers, grains, grasses, and vegetables. Burbank's most successful strains and varieties include the Shasta daisy, the fire poppy , the "Santa Rosa" plum, the "Flaming Gold" nectarine, the "Wickson" plum (named after the agronomist Edward J. Wickson), the freestone peach, and the white blackberry. A natural genetic variant of the Burbank potato with russet-colored skin later became known as the russet Burbank potato. This large, brown-skinned, white-fleshed potato has become the world's predominant potato in food processing. The Russet Burbank potato was in fact invented to help with the devastating situation in Ireland during the Irish Potato famine. "It was the savage Indian who gave us, here in America, the most important crop we have. It was the Indian who found a wild grass covering the plains and developed it into corn. Or, to turn it the other way around, it was the desire of the Indian for a food plant like this that led the teosinte grass, by gradual adaptation, to produce Indian corn or maize." (p 126 V. I). Maroon cloth over boards with titling on spine in gilt. Burbank's black and white bust up photo is in an oval cut surrounding by a gilt wreath on the front cover. Signed by Author(s).
