Spine ends stiffly bumped; spine lettering somewhat faded but legible; interior front hinge very slightly fragile. Original engraved title page signed "I. v. Meurs Sculp." Prev. owner's bookplate; light interior foxing; occasional faint half-moon tidemark to margin of some pgs, not affecting legibility at all; Contents otherwise unmarked, binding firm. [22], 826 pp. + [57] pp. of Indexes in rear, engraved illustrations of emblems. Includes laudatory poem by Jacobus van de Walle at opening pages. Text in Latin, printed in double columns. [viii], 683 pages of text, follwed by [xxiv] pages of index. Original full vellum binding, with ordinary soiling and shelfwear. A few pages (near page 500) are misbound. Engraved title page is present, but somewhat rubbed and worn; previous owner's ticket affixed "D. Francesco Paolo Arc.e Maulucci" and another inked name reads something like "J. I. P. Revigore de Pueliche." Additionally illustrated with 52 engraved copperplates of emblems. Minor staining to top edge of most pages. Previous owner was Leonard Baskin; on rear pastedown endpaper in his hand Lisa & Leonard Baskin" followed by his squiggle. Also, a notation in his hand on the front endpaper. Emblem books; Church year meditations; Annee liturgique; Meditations; Emblemes. Measures 16cm in height; 6+5/16 inches. Text is in Latin. One volume only of Book 3 v. in 4. Kupfertitel. Die erste Ausgabe erschien 1648. - Praz 327. - Henricus Engelgrave (1610 - 1679) war ab 1655 Jesuitenprovinzial von Belgien. Das vorliegende, öfters aufgelegte Werk (im Jahre 1659 erschien unter dem Titel Lucis Evangeliae ein dritter Teil dazu) ist Das Hauptwerk dieses belgischen Schriftstellers und Entwerfer von Emblemen. Die Embleme wurden von Jacob von Meurs in Kupfer gestochen. Engelgrave, der zu seiner Zeit auch zu den bedeutendsten Predigern gezählt wurde, verfasste sein Emblembuch wie eine Predigtensammlung. Er beginnt mit den Sonntagen des Advents und arbeitet sich so unter der Bearbeitung der klassischen Bibelstellen durch das Kirchenjahr. - Es fehlt der typographische Titelblatt zu Bd. 2. - Teils etw. gebräunt, fleckig oder wasserrandig.
