Item Description: Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, 1910. Cloth. Book Condition: Good-Minus. No Jacket. Morse, Alice (illustrator). 1st Edition. Later printing of the 1903 first edition of an important early publication of an African-American author's poetry. Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) was one of the first African-Americans to attain national prominence, as signified by William Dean Howells' introduction to his earlier book, (Dunbar's first by a major publisher), "Lyrics of the Lowly Life." Howells was the eminent late 19th and early 20th century American critic of literature. He edited the influential "Atlantic" magazine, and wrote many novels, including "The Rise of Silas Lapham." Howells especially praised Dunbar's dialect poetry, writing, "I do not know any one else at present who could quite have written the dialect pieces. These are divinations and reports of what passes in the hearts and minds of a lowly [using Dunbar's phrase] people whose poetry had hitherto been inarticulately expressed in music, but now finds, for the first time in our tongue, literary interpretation of a very artistic completeness." Dunbar was the son of former slaves and also wrote short stories and novels. His first books were self-published and sold to passengers when he was an elevator operator. His success encouraged him to become a full-time writer. His life ended at 33 years as he succumbed to tuberculosis, but he had achieved the satisfaction of being nationally recognized at that early age. Dunbar's audience was primarily white. His themes included so-called "ordinary things" [in this book, for example, two little boots], pre-Civil War South in a pastoral, idyllic voice, and the difficulties black families experienced as they migrated to northern urban settings after the Civil War. Racial disquiet occasionally emerged in some of his later stories and in poems of this book, such as "Speakin' at de Cou't-House." This book comes with a photocopy of an original newspaper clipping of unknown origin and date on "Paul Laurence Dunbar. The Celebrated Negro Poet" laid-in. The book is unmarked, except for the names of two previous owners, Samuel Goodley and Edith, on the first free end paper. There is an occasional soil on the pages, but nearly all of the 180 toned pages are clean. More than 100 poems. The pages are deckled. The cloth cover is a darkened olive brown with quite bright gilt decoration and lettering on the front board and spine by "A. M.," thought to be Alice Morse. Tightly bound, rounded corners, and normal shelf wear for an antiquarian book of this vintage. Two half-round dents are located in approximately the center bottom edges of the front and rear boards. The frontispiece features a photographic reproduction of a young African-American child seated on a barrel, separated from the title page by an intact tissue guard. This is an important early literary achievement by an African-American author who tragically died young, but who had managed to make a vital contribution to the literary history of the United States. Dunbar's companion poetry book, "Lyrics of the Lowly Life," in matching format by the same publisher and issued as a set, also is available from this bookseller REO Et Cetera. Light green cloth with gilt Art Nouveau decorations by Margaret Armstrong. Top Edges Gilt. Paul Laurence Dunbar (June 27, 1872 - February 9, 1906) was an African American poet, novelist, and playwright of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Much of his popular work in his lifetime used a Negro dialect, which helped him become one of the first nationally-accepted African American writers. Much of his writing, however, does not use dialect; these more traditional poems have become of greater interest to scholars. This is one of his lesser known works, apparently missing from some bibliographies. Poems are mixed in standard and dialect. . Light shelfwear, minor bumping.
