Book First Edition
Trade Paperback. Condition: Good. First Edition. 118 Pages Indexed. White label on front cover and one word previous owner's name on the half-title page. No other marks or stamps and interior text and illustrations pages are near flawless. Motorists' Library. Car Care and Service Manual. Much of the information given in the following pages will be needed during routine servicing. Useful as these tables are, however, there is one point to bear in mind: car design is never static and modifications are often made during the production run of a particular model which may affect some of the figures in the tables. The enthusiast will be particularly interested in the figures for performance and fuel consumption given on page 5, which should enable a fairly accurate assessment to be made of the mechanical condition and state of tune of a car. Acceleration times, from a standstill to 30, 40, 50 and 60 m.p.h, and upwards, are often quoted in published road tests, but a good figure in such tests calls for really brutal engagement of the clutch with the engine running at high speed, and also for "snatching" the gear changes -- driving methods which may be appropriate under competition conditions but which are unlikely to appeal to a considerate owner. The acceleration figures for important speed ranges in the various gears are therefore quoted instead in this chapter. They give a good indication of the condition of the car and call for no special driving skill: only for careful timing while the car accelerates through the range, the best throttle opening being found by trial and error. The maximum speed figures should be within the reach of a car which is in good tune, as it is assumed that speedometer readings will be taken and most instruments are slightly optimistic at higher speeds. If your car is in really good shape you will probably be able to exceed them, depending, of course, on road and weather conditions. Fuel consumption is always the subject of controversy; to be honest, it is impossible to quote any hard-and-fast figure and the results obtained by individual drivers of the same car can vary over a wide range, depending on the way in which the car is driven on the road, and traffic conditions. Contents in 11 Chapters: Getting to Know Your Car, Do-it-yourself Maintenance, Lubrication, Routine Servicing and Adjustments, Servicing the Ignition System, The Carburettor and Fuel System, Decarbonizing Engine Overhaul and Tuning, Brake Adjustment and Servicing, Steering Suspension and Tyres, The Electrical Equipment, and When Things go Wrong.
