About this Item: Jerusalem, The Hebrew University., 1986. 8°. 535 pages. Original Hardcover with 535 pages. Original Hardcover. Very good+ condition. [The Centre for Research and Documentation of East-European Jewry]. Alexei Maximovich Peshkov (28 March [O.S. 16 March] 1868 18 June 1936), primarily known as Maxim (Maksim) Gorky, was a Russian and Soviet writer, a founder of the socialist realism literary method and a political activist. He was also a five-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Around fifteen years before success as a writer, he frequently changed jobs and roamed across the Russian Empire; these experiences would later influence his writing. Gorky's most famous works were The Lower Depths (1902), Twenty-six Men and a Girl, The Song of the Stormy Petrel, My Childhood, The Mother, Summerfolk and Children of the Sun. He had an association with fellow Russian writers Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov; Gorky would later mention them in his memoirs. Gorky was active with the emerging Marxist social-democratic movement. He publicly opposed the Tsarist regime, and for a time closely associated himself with Vladimir Lenin and Alexander Bogdanov's Bolshevik wing of the party, but later became a bitter critic of Lenin as an overly ambitious, cruel and power-hungry potentate who brooked no challenge to his authority. For a significant part of his life, he was exiled from Russia and later the Soviet Union. In 1932, he returned to USSR on Joseph Stalin's personal invitation and died there in June 1936. (Wikipedia). About this Item: NP, Kiev, 1903. Hardcover. Condition: vg. First edition. Folio. Size approx. 28 x 20 inches (50 x 70 cm). Rare micrographic portrait of Maxim Gorky composed from the letters of his short story Malva. The portrait was engraved by S. B. Khazin based on a photograph of the famous Russian author taken in Nizhny Novgorod by the Russian photographer Maxim Petrovich Dmitriev and printed by S. V. Kul'zhenko. Portrait passed by the censor in Kiev, 23 February 1903. The technique of portraiture using words and letters appears in Russia in 1900 with Khazin's portrait of Count Leo Tolstoy which used 4700 characters to form the work. His second portrait in this style was the present work, that of Gorky, which used the approximately 82,000 characters of the story to form the hair, clothing, and chair on which Gorky is sitting. Though Malva was first published in 1897, Khazin used the latest edition which appeared in 1903 as the second piece in the third volume of Gorky's story, as identified in the title. Little is known of Khazin except that he was mostly likely born near the town of Yarysheva Mogilev-Podolsk in the Ukraine, and that he had his portraits printed in Kiev. His technique consisted of using a well-known photograph, leaving the face untouched but washing away everything else except for an outline of the original. He then drew the portrait using the handwritten text, with the individual letters usually less than a millimeter in height, all of which needed to be engraved in mirror image so that it could be read once the print was struck. Not found in OCLC or any major European libraries. There is a copy at Centraljnaya Gorodskaya Biblioteka im. A.M. Gorjkogo, Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Sporadic and minor closed tears along edges (not affecting portrait). Moderate age-toning along edges (not affecting image). Print in overall very good condition. Seller Inventory # 33059

Typed Manuscript, signed ("M. Gorkii"), warning of: Gorky, Maxim

About this Item: Capri, 1912. 2 pp. typed manuscript on paper, in Russian, 1 p. autograph cover letter, in English, with a typed English translation of the manuscript. 4to. "creating ? a new and irreconcilable enemy in Persia". Frederick Whelen was a member of the Persia Committee, which was a group formed in opposition to Britain's policy toward Persia in the wake of the 1907 Anglo-Russian treaty, which crushed the nascent constitutionalist movement and divided Iran into Engish and Russian "spheres of influence." Early in 1912, when Russian troops invaded northern Iran, ostensibly to restore order, Whelan invited Gorky, via Prince V. Bariatinsky, to comment on the "Persian trouble"; Gorky responds with this manuscript, arguing that the Russian government's invasion is inhumane, futile, and "is creating, by its senseless conduct, a new and irreconcilable enemy in Persia for the Russian people. Moreover, the conduct of the Russian troops in Persia is serving to strengthen the spread of Orthodox Pan-Islamism, which rejects the creative ideas and principles fostered in Europe, and in this way the Russian Government's actions are injurious to the interests of European culture . I cannot see what ideas useful to the Persians the Russian Bureaucracy can possibly introduce. Finally I think that the seizure of Persia has been due not so much to the interests of Russian capital as to the desire of the Dynasty of the Romanoffs to give to their people a new extensions of territory and by so doing to commemorate the 300th anniversary of their own establishment in Russia. This tercentenary-as it is well known, is fictitious, and this gift will develop into a source of misfortune for the Russian people, for it is impossible to believe that Persia will reconcile herself to the enslavement which threatens her". Very light foxing, overall very good 2 pp. typed manuscript on paper, in Russian, 1 p. autograph cover letter, in English, with a typed English translation of the manuscript. 4to.
