Item Description: Bologna Per gli HH. del Dozza 1655, 1655. First Edition of the Opere issue, second printing of the Macchie Solari preceeded only by the issue of 1613 With woodcut printer’s device of the Lincei on the title-page, woodcut initials, engraved portrait of Galileo on p. 5 and 38 full-page copper engravings of sunspots, 5 copper engraved plates of satellites of Jupiter, on copper engraving , 8 woodcut and typographic diagrams in the text. 4to, original printed sheets, sewn and unbound. 156 pp. A very pleasing and very well preserved copy of this highly important book. HIGHLY IMPORTANT FIRST DOZZA PRINTING OF GALILEO’S FIRST PUBLISHED ENDORSEMENT OF THE COPERNICAN MODEL. The work also includes Galileo’s first written account of his observations of the phases of Venus and the mysteries of Saturn. In his astrological observations, Galileo observed the phenomenon of sun spots. He noticed that they always narrowed as they approached the edges of the sun. He concluded that this was the effect of foreshortening and that these were on the surface of a sun that was in rotation. Aristotle’s theory that the sun was incorruptible and pure was dashed by these discoveries while Galileo’s claim to be the first to have discovered these spots embroiled him in controversy. Another man--a powerful Jesuit- also claimed to be the first to discover the spots and came up with conclusions very different (and less heretical) than Galileo’s. It is impossible to know who was actually first, but Galileo conclusions would keep his view in public consciousness. Though Galileo has ultimately been proved correct, this work and it’s further implications of confirming the Copernican view of the universe, would bring the wrath of the Catholic church down on Galileo. His specific endorsement of the Copernican model foreshadowed many of his later theories and the political and religious consequences. While not jailed or formally punished, Galileo was forbidden to teach or espouse his theories. A promise that was not kept by Galileo. Bookseller Inventory # 24382
