About this Item: Random House, New York, 1957. Navy Blue Cloth on Deco Bds. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine (brodarted). BOMC Edition. Yes, this 396 page BOMC Edition, being an increasingly well respected and energetically applauded offering it is proudly presented with great and well deserved hubris by Hirschfeld Galleries in BOTH the publishers original binding and original dustwrapper. The binding is quarter navy blue cloth spine on decorated ligther blue boards with gilt tiling. And this find is rock solid tight and clean, AAA all the unbumped way. The original jakcet is also AAA save for a nearly invisible but long tear across the verso of the jacket. But not to worry or be sad, for said imperfection is made considerably less objectionable, since, on the very positive side of things, the jacket is now and forevermore protected from any future ambient abuse and resulting degradation by professionally fitted and applied yet instantly removable Brodart mylar. Translated by Francis Steegmuller. BONUS: THIS IS A DIVIDEND BOOK as explained in a 4 page pamphlet laid in, and signed on the plate by the president of the BOMC. New translation noted. Classic book made famous by Greta GarboThe bored wife of a bumbling provincial physician, Emma seeks to escape from the tedium of her life with romantic fantasies and adulterous affairs, but is ultimately doomed to disillusionment. Unable to come to terms with reality, Emma is a figure at once noble and banal, tragic and absurd. With her wrenching story, Flaubert forged an unforgettable classic that has remained one of the most admired and influential novels ever written. Hirschfeld Galleries' offerings such as this one which take on a life of their own and speak so very loudly for themselves. Read to learn and enjoy; go forth to share and enjoin. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author(s). Hardcover Classic. Seller Inventory # 007512

About this Item: New York City, NY: Farrar Straus & Giroux, 1986. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 240 pages. Published in 1986. Book-length account on subject. One of Mario Vargas Llosa's finest achievements. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Mario Vargas Llosa's "La Orgia perpetua" in a felicitous English translation. The culmination of the author's lifelong obsession with Flaubert and his masterpiece. "Deals with the story the novel tells and the sources it uses, the way in which it transforms itself into time and language. Examines the 'added element' Flaubert joined to his perceptions of reality: His humanizing of objects, obsession with pairs, and manipulation of fictional time and narrative. Finally, focussing on such issues as the anti-hero and interior monologue, the author discusses the place of 'Madame Bovary' in the development of the modern novel" (Richard Kuczkowski). Mario Vargas Llosa is the writer/intellectual/philosopher par excellence among the Latin-American geniuses of the so-called Boom: He refuses to be categorized, labeled, and reduced by ideology, whether it is Fascist conservatism, political correctness, or Leftist academicism, what he has condemned as "authoritarianism of the Left and the Right". He considers himself an heir to the great European cultural tradition yet his work is firmly grounded in Latin America's (not just his native Peru's) history and mythology. His aesthetics and literary practice - Vargas Llosa has embraced and appropriated every literary genre - prompted Roberto Bolano, his greatest successor, to consider him an inescapable influence, among a handful of others, on contemporary Latin-American literature. That is to say, to be a Latin-American writer is to become a Classical master of language and a Modernist artist, writing in language of the highest quality and reinventing literary form and convention at the same time. Literary genres are inventions of a particular culture's idea of imagination and storytelling, "templates" that Vargas Llosa transforms into "poetic tales" (in Harold Bloom's brilliant phrase). An absolute "must-have" title for Mario Vargas Llosa collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Mario Vargas Llosa. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a late-modern classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First American Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Most copies available online have serious flaws. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Cervantes Prize, awarded to the greatest living writers in Spanish by the Spanish Government, in 1994. Winner of the Jerusalem Prize in 1995. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARIO VARGAS LLOSA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0374230773. Les passages qui avaient été censurés dans la Revue de Paris sont en fait beaucoup plus nombreux que ceux ici soulignés. Vicaire. Un petit livret de 2007 sur la censure de Madame Bovary est joint. About this Item: Paris Michel Lévy Frères 1857, 1857. 2 volumes. First edition, the first state with the dedication leaf reading 'Senart' rather than 'Senard.' 12mo, in a handsome signed binding by Creuzevault of full crushed blue morocco, lettered in gilt on the spines, original wrappers retained and bound in. The binding is noticeably unadorned, probably intentionally so as to not draw attention to the controversial title within. [8], [5]-232;[ 4],[233]-490 pp. FIRST EDITION AND FIRST STATE of Flaubert's first published work, considered his masterpiece and a masterpiece of 19th century literature. It is a seminal work of Realism and one of the most influential novels ever written. But, When it was first serialized in 'La Revue de Paris' between October and December of 1856, the novel was attacked for obscenity by public prosecutors. The resulting trial, held in January 1857, made the story notorious. After Flaubert's acquittal in February it was published in book form and became a bestseller, but not one without controversy. In style, the book makes a striking impression. The precision and brevity of detail is unexcelled, and the novel has often been described as a "perfect" work of fiction. It is among the most imitated novels ever written, critic James Woods once said, ".[its] influence is almost too familiar to be visible". Henry James once wrote, "Madame Bovary has a perfection that not only stamps it, but that makes it stand almost alone; it holds itself with such a supreme unapproachable assurance as both excites and defies judgment.". [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition. Elegant contemporary purple shagreen (uncommon according to Clouzot), spine in five compartments with gilt fillets and triple blind-ruled compartments, blindstamped roulettes to head- and tail-pieces and edges of covers, quintuple gilt fillet frame and large blindruled fillet to covers, gilt dentelle frame to pastedowns, cream moirée silk endpapers and pastedowns, a little light spotting to endpapers and pastedowns, all edges gilt, ex libris to one pastedown, clear light dampstain to foot of first few leaves. A very rare autograph inscription signed by Gustave Flaubert to Alfred Guérard, a close friend of Louis Bouilhet, who is the dedicatee of the work: " à Alf. Guérard souvenir d'amitié. Gustave Flaubert [to Alf. Guérard, a friendly souvenir]." The final letters of the word "amitié" and Flaubert's name shaved by the binder. Autograph inscriptions by Flaubert are very rare on copies of Madame Bovary (cf. Clouzot). Alfred Guérard was, with Gustave Flaubert, one of the closest friends of Louis Bouilhet, and an important industrialist in Rouen, who was also a friend of the arts and a true patron of Bouilhet, who had dedicated several works to him. Flaubert, as his correspondence also tells us, always invited him to his literary or artistic dinners. He was, most notably, one of the very few people to hear, in 1863, the abortive féerie, the "Château des cœurs", which only got as far as a "solemn reading before a learned council" that Flaubert assembled from among his society friends. "We wanted to have a bourgeois audience to judge the naive effect of the work" (see his letters to his niece Caroline in December 1863). A very good copy with an autograph inscription, in a handsome contemporary binding. Seller Inventory # 46560
