Item Description: The Viking Press, 1953. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Bemelmans; Ludwig (illustrator). 1st Edition. A US 1st Edition 1st Print hardback copy indicated by the statement 'Published by the Viking Press in 1953' to the copyright page with no further printings mentioned. This story first appeared in Good Housekeeping. - SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, USING FIRST NAME ONLY, IN BLUE INK TO THE HALF TITLE PAGE, WITHOUR FURTHER INSCRIPTION. - The book is in good condition. Externally, it has ware to the top and bottom of the spine, with rubbing to the bottom of the boards and the outside corners of the boards, with some small loss to the cloth in these areas. Sunning to the page block. Internally, there is a previous owner's name written in pencil to the illustrated front paste-down, and a previous booksellers price and details, again written in pencil, to the reverse of the front free end paper. Otherwise, it is a good copy without tears to the pages or further inscription. - The dust jacket is in fair condition only but has not been price clipped with a price of $3.00 shown to the top of the front flap. 'The Caldecott' can be seen printed on these remnants (am assuming that this refers to the Caldecott Medal). Tears to the reverse. Sunning/ fading across the jacket, but it is still quite bright. Creasing running from the top to the bottom of the reverse flap. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 000683

Item Description: 0, 0. No Binding. Book Condition: Fine. LUDWIG BEMELMANS (illustrator). 1st Edition. LUDWIG BEMELMANS, (AMERICAN 1898-1962) WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, 7.5¿ X 5¿ (Sight) FRAMED TO DIMENSIONS OF 17.25¿ X 14.5¿ SIGNED LOWER MIDDLE A Stunning Original Watercolor painting on paper by Ludwig Bemelmans (see bio below). A vibrant classic piece in fine condition of a portrait of a woman. Ludwig Bemelmans always considered himself an artist first, and an author second. This piece is richly toned in inks with watercolor wash in the classic Bemelmans style. Has an important, wonderful presence on the wall, presented in a gilt rubbed wood frame with a stunning richly textured linen mat (hard to see the texture in the images), and UV glass. Fully framed and glazed using 100% archival materials. The artwork is a unique original piece from a tipped in page from the book, The Donkey Inside, limited signed edition. The limited edition was an early Bemelman¿s title in which he created a unique watercolor for each book. Each individual piece was rendered on a separate page and then later ¿tipped in¿ to the book. The page was then gently removed from the book and framed (the process could easily be reversed if desired). The framed art will be accompanied by the book for provenance. Originally published in 1941, The Donkey Inside contains chapters that originally appeared in Town & Country, Vogue, Globe, and The New Yorker. Presented as a trip to Ecuador, this book is actually based on notes takes during several voyages through South America. Bemelmans says: ¿In a sense it is a portrait of that continent, from Chile to the Panama Canal, but it is focused on Ecuador, because there I found, in stronger outline than anywhere else, the things particular to South America.¿ This piece is SIGNED by Ludwig Bemelmans lower middle. Original works of art by Bemelmans are extremely scarce with paintings/scenes from the characters of his books selling for over $22,000 Condition: The art is in excellent condition BIOGRAPHY: Bemelmans, Ludwig: Beloved by three generations of young readers, Ludwig Bemelmans is best known for his Madeline books. What many may not know is that Bemelmans, born in the Austrian Tyrol, considered himself more an artist than an author. Bemelmans began writing in 1934 with the introduction of Hansi, his first of 15 children¿s books. His diverse language base gave him a unique and quirky style of writing that children adored. His watercolor illustrations belied a simplistic style that partnered well with his sophisticated verse. Until his death in 1962, he wrote an average of one to two books per year. In addition to his juvenile fiction, his literary works included screenplays, adult novels, and stories. Bemelmans was a contributor to Harper¿s Bazaar, Vogue, and the New Yorker, among others. His book Madeline¿s Rescue was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Medal in 1953. As an artist, Ludwig Bemelmans designed a Broadway set, completed several Hollywood projects, illustrated for the cover of the New Yorker, and painted several murals. His art can be found at New York¿s Carlyle Hotel, the Museé National d¿Art in Paris, France, and in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. His character Madeline, the spunky heroine of Bemelmans¿ classic five book series, celebrates her 75th anniversary this year. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for additional rare books and original artwork. (Please note international shipping will incur an additional cost to ship, please inquire). Signed by Author(s). Item Description: 1956. Bemelmans, Ludwig (illustrator). Watercolor and ink on paper, measuring 11 by 8 1/2 inches (28x22cm). Matted and framed. Signed by Bemelmans. This shoulder-length portrait of Bemelmans's most enduring character is done in the later, bold style encountered in Madeline and the Bad Hat, and it shows red-headed Madeline wearing her characteristic wide-brimmed hat trimmed with a blue ribbon and high-collared shirt with a blue neckpiece. Although Bemelmans was quite prolific, original drawings of Madeline seldom appear on the market. Slight mat burn, else fine in a lightly worn wood frame, painted pink to complement the color of Madeline's rosy cheeks. Bookseller Inventory # 24865
