E' descritta in maniera particolareggiata la ricognizione a lungo raggio che indusse l'imperatore d'Austria Francesco Giuseppe I a riprendere l'offensiva contro gli eserciti alleati di Francia e Regno di Sardegna. Una micidiale serie di battaglie d'incontro svoltesi lungo un arco di fronte di 18 chilometri, in maniera quasi del tutto autonoma da parte dei tre eserciti belligeranti in altrettanti settori principali delimitati geograficamente dall'altipiano di San Martino a nord, dalla fascia collinare di Solferino al centro e dalla piana di Medole-Guidizzolo a sud. La lotta si accese subito furibonda dapprima a Medole, poi lungo tutta la dorsale collinare che dalle Grole passa per Solferino e arriva a Cavriana e oltre fino a Volta Mantovana. Poi si affievolì, non a causa del celebre temporale pomeridiano, ma perché non c'erano più risorse da sacrificare sull'altare dell'umana stoltezza.
