Item Description: Oxford University Press, 1991. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Collectible; Like New. No Jacket. First Edition. First edition. xliii, 104, 367 pp. The book contains the biography of an American bondman William Wells Brown, which was written by his daughter Josephine Brown. It also presents the precedent-setting biography of Martin R. Delany, which helped to introduce an analytical approach to biography writing in African-American letters. An unabashed success story of one man's military career during the Civil War and his subsequent work in the Freedman's Bureau during Reconstruction, this book, written at a crucial juncture in American history, creates a vivid portrait of a man who comes to represent the voice of national union, mediation of conflict between blacks and whites in the South, and a fair and equitable democratic society. Introduction by William L. Andrews, with a foreword to the Schomburg Supplement by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Bookseller Inventory # 2203185

Item Description: Boston, MA: January 10th, circa [1890]. [1890]., 1890. Book Condition: Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling the first & 4th sides of a sheet of cream-colored paper folded to form 4 sides, each 6-1/4 inches high by 4 inches wide. Signed "Louise Chandler Moulton". Folded once for mailing. Near fine. Moulton writes to Major James Pond of the Pond Lecture Bureau thanking him for inviting her to a series of lectures by Dean Stubbs and regretting that she has previous engagements for the Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. "This last I most especially regret. I do so want to hear Dean Stubbs speak of Ely. Will there be another opportunity? I have promised to take part in an Authors' Reading, for the College Club, to-morrow night. I wish I hadn't, for I would far rather listen to Dean Stubbs."Louise Chandler Moulton [1835-1908] was an American poet, story-writer and critic. Her first volume of collected poetry and prose, "This, That and the Other", was published in 1854. Thereafter she published further volumes of poetry, short stories and travel writing. Meanwhile she took an important place in American literary society, writing regular critiques for the New York Tribune and a weekly literary letter for the Sunday issue of the Boston Herald. In 1876 she visited Europe and started spending summers in London and the rest of the year in Boston, where her salon was a principal meeting place for literary talent. Bookseller Inventory # 35778
