The last leaf of the text is a touch grubby, the rest is clean and crisp Pulton [Poulton], Andrew (16541710), was an English Jesuit, educated for the Society at St Omer. He was sent into England in 1687 to teach at the Jesuit school then held in the Savoy, and held a debate in St Martin in the Fields with Thomas Tenison (later Archbishop of Canterbury) who mocked him for his poor English. There were various tracts between the two camps. He was arrested in 1688 but later released, and later became a chaplain to the army of James in Ireland. He died at St Germain in 1710. Wake, William (16571737), became Archbishop of Canterbury. He was originally from Blandford Forum in Dorset, and became a convinced Anglican after spending time in France. Item Description: London: Printed by Jo. Martyn, and Ja. Allestry, Printers to the Royal Society, and are to be sold at their shop at the Bell in S. Paul's Church-yard, MDCLXIV (1664)., 1664. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 4to, recent full speckled calf in the Cambridge style . [16], 120, [2], 4, [2], 520, [2], 2150, [4], 5583, [1] pp., errata. First edition. "A protest against the careless destruction of England's forests to fuel the furnaces of the glass and iron industries. The work was influential in establishing a much-needed programme of reforestation that had a lasting effect on the British economy. This was the first official publication of the newly established Royal Society" (Garrison-Morton). With the eighteenth century heraldic book-plate of James Henry Newman of Dorking affixed to front paste-down, and Newman's signature at upper right of title-page. Also with a number of early and interesting marginal notations, presumably in Newman's hand. The best of them occurs in chapter XV Of the Birch. Evelyn writes 'Lastly, of the whitest part of the old wood, found commonly in doating birches, is made the grounds of our gallants sweet-powder; to say nothing here of magisterial fasces, for which antiently the cudgels were us'd by the Lictor; as now the gentler Rods by our tyrannical Paedagogues.' To which Newman has responded in an adjacent note: 'It is very likely that before this gentleman had so much learning, it was driven into his Nockum by this sort of Tyranny.' REFERENCES: Wing, Early English Books, E3516; Keynes, John Evelyn, 40. CONDITION: Good, occasional worming. Bookseller Inventory # 1874

Sylva, Or a Discourse on Forest-Trees, and: EVELYN, John.

Item Description: London: Printed by Jo. Martyn and Ja. Allestry; by John Martyn and James Allestry; by J. Macock, for John Martin, and James Allestry, 1664, 1664. Three parts in one volume, quarto (284 x 186 mm). Early nineteenth-century half calf, brown morocco label, spine tooled in blind with gilt rules, marbled paper sides, all edges speckled brown, marbled endpapers. First and third titles printed in red and black, first title with the engraved arms of the Royal Society. Lacks the errata leaf at rear. Old ink correction to one letter on title page, small round paper label to upper front joint, contemporary to binding. Binding rubbed, short split to head of front joint, title page and facing license leaf a little soiled, light waterstaining to most foremargins. An excellent copy. Two woodcut illustrations in the texts, woodcut historiated initials. First edition of Evelyn's most celebrated book and famously the first book to be printed by order of the Royal Society, which had been founded four years previously. During the 1640s and 1650s production of glass and iron increased rapidly and the wood used to fire the furnaces and factories was not being replaced by fresh planting. This led to a serious shortage of wood from which the Navy could construct ships. Evelyn appealed to the king for a concerted campaign of reforestation and claimed in his preface that he had induced landowners to plant many millions of trees. Alexander Hunter, who edited five editions of Sylva in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, wrote in his preface that "soon after the publication of the Sylva. the Spirit for Planting increased to a high degree; and there is reason to believe that many of our ships, [used] in the last war. were constructed from Oaks planted at that time." The appendix Pomona includes a collection of five contributions on the making of cider by other writers, Mr Beale, Sir Paul Neil, John Newburgh, Doctor Smith and Capt. Taylor. First editions of Evelyn's Sylva are usually found either recently rebound or in poor condition, and usually rebacked - copies in this condition are far from common. Henrey 132; Keynes 40-52-57; Wing E-3508 & 3516. Bookseller Inventory # 87758
