States "First Titan Edition September 1991"; number line complete 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 -- the first printing, thus. (British edition "by arrangement with Ballantine Books. Interior text copyright 1968." Why it took 23 years for this text to reach British fans we do not know. "Star Trek" had reached Britain by the 1970s, though right up through the 1980s the BBC banned broadcasts of the episodes "Miri," "Plato's Stepchildren," "The Empath," and "Whom Gods Destroy," the pantywaists there explaining those episodes' subject matter was unacceptable "because they all (deal) most unpleasantly with the already unpleasant subjects of madness, torture, sadism and disease." This from the nation that brought us "The Blood on Satan's Claw" (1970) and Ken Russell's "The Devils" (1971), not to mention the magnificent Ingrid Pitt slurping blood in Hammer's "Vampire Lovers" -- also 1970? So we're to presume the BBC declines to report on the cheerful Muslim "guest workers" now regularly chopping up unarmed British civilians with machetes in the streets of London? Or is that not considered excessively "unpleasant"? The twin 32-pg. B&W glossy photo sections feature the stunning Sherry Jackson from Episode 7, "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", but not, obviously, Kathryn Hays as Gem the empath (and no Susan Oliver, either, though there are lots of loving photos of futuristic-looking chairs, as well as of Dr. McCoy's Art Deco salt shakers, er, we mean . . . medical instruments.) 363 pp. including (partial?) episode guide, followed by 5 pp. publisher's ads. Now reduced from $90.
