A superb copy in the clean dust jacket with a couple of short closed tears to the front panel. 20 plates. First edition of the first monograph on medieval Islamic costume since Reinhard Dozy's Dictionnaire détaillé (1845). Mayer's findings, based on literary and documentary evidence and focusing on the development of court ceremonial under al-Nasir Muhammad, are still authoritative today. The Mamluks were a Turkic slave dynasty who ruled Egypt, Syria and the Hijaz from the overthrow of the Ayyubid dynasty in 1250 to the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in 1517, with Cairo as their capital.
