Not dated, estimated as circa 1950 since the author prepared the book but did not live to see its publication. He died in December 1949, the cause of which the biography on the dust jacket attributes to the treatment he received in the concentration camps of Buchenwald and Dachau. The book consists of a 30-page printing of the author's lecture, followed by over 200 pages of notes and appendices. An examination of the psychological and anthropological roots of violence, and the author ends the lecture by expressing the hope that mankind can throw off the "wolf's mask" and return to a earlier state of peacefulness and innocence. The lecture covers pages 23-52, followed by 192-pages of detailed notes and appendices on Jung and Lamarck, The Roman Lupercalia ritual, the flagellation of women in Dionysian mysteries, and vampirism. - Author's foreword: "The Aim of this book is wider than its title would lead the reader to expect. It attempts to suggest the possiility of a historical, or rather prehistorical, evolutionist derivation of all crimes of violence, from the individual attack on life known as murder or manslaughter to the collective organized killing which we call war" (15). - Eisler was a Viennese historian, anthropologist, and philosopher who was imprisoned in Buchenwald and Dachau before emigrating to England. He gave several lectures to the Jung's Eranos group in Switzerland. - Other editions were printed in England (Routledge, Kegan Paul, 1951) and in the US (Philosophical Library, 1952).
