Item Description: James Thrall Soby, Hartford, CT, 1934. Spiral - Plastic. Book Condition: Very Good-. Man Ray (illustrator). FIRST EDITION, acquired before the fictitious "2nd edition" notation was added to boost flagging sales. This first monograph of Man Ray's photos is divided into five sections: general subjects; the female figure; women's faces; celebrity portraits; rayographs. Each section opens with a page of text in French and English (or German and French) with contributions by leading figures of the Dada and Surrealist movements: André Breton, Paul Éluard, Rrose Selavy (aka, Marcel Duchamp), and Tristan Tzara. In addition, Man Ray also wrote a preface, and a portrait contributed by Picasso. A number of famous faces are identified among the photos. Also include are a number of his experimental images, including ¿solarisation--a technique he perfected reversing the tone on only parts of an image--and his self-labled rayographs, known today as ¿photograms. Some consider this to be one of the most important photography books of the 20th century. Photographic front wrap is still bright. Plastic spiral binding is soiled and uneven, yet still secure. Back plain glossy cover is notably creased with a bit of dirt, smudges and other incidentals. Creases to back corners follow through to some of the pages as shown in photos. Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks. Some clean closed tears to pages (with a few repaired with archival tape). Some light smudges scattered throughout book. Most notable damage can be seen in description photos. Book may exhibit additional minor signs of age or wear. Man Ray (1890-1976), born Emmanuel Radnitzky, was a renowned representative of avant-garde photography in the 20th century and is considered as the pioneer of Surrealist photography. Ray's artistic work is very diverse. He was a painter, object artist, and a film maker. He was the very first artist whose images were more valuable to collectors than his artistic work. He therefore made a significant contribution to the elevation of photography to a form of art. Undocumented sources note that less than 3000 copies of this book were printed. This is a well-preserved used copy of a notably fragile book, in exceptional condition. It can be found cited in "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" by Andrew Roth as well as "The Photobook: A History" by Parr and Badger. This copy is in better than average condition available on the internet and priced to sell! 104 pages of B&W plates. 10 x 12.25 inches. Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only. If actual shipping cost is less than the AbeBooks estimate, it is our practice to REFUND the difference to the buyer. Bookseller Inventory # 007463

Item Description: James Thrall Soby (with Random House) & Cahiers d'Art, Hartford & New York / Paris, 1934. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is a first edition, second printing of Man Ray's highly acclaimed, "Man Ray Photographs 1920 - 1934 Paris" published by James Thrall Soby (with Random House) & Cahiers d'Art, Hartford & New York / Paris in 1934. There is controversy surrounding the actual edition of this book. Writing in The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century, Andrew Roth wrote points out that the first edition, second issue, with the fictitious "Second Edition" on the cancel title page was placed there by the publisher who "attempted to generate demand where none existed by suggesting the edition had sold out. After replacing the title pages of these copies with one stating second edition, he returned them for sale." Regardless of the issue point, Parr & Badger in their book, "The Photobook: A History", state that the Man Ray photographs contained in this edition are "regarded by some as amongst the greatest of the twentieth century. This was Man Ray's first monograph and his friends pulled out all the stops to herald it. It contains poetry and essays by the leading figures of the Dada and Surrealist movements: André Breton, Paul Éluard, Marcel Duchamp (written under his famous pseudonym "Rrose Selavy") and Tristan Tzara. Containing 84 stunning full page black and white monochromes (photographs) and 19 rayographs, the book is a tall quarto (12 x 10 inches) that is spiral bound in stiff photographically illustrated wrappers. The condition of the wrappers is Very Good+ with some edge wear, rubs and soiling with 2 of the plastic rings on the top and 1 on the bottom broken. The interior is in Near Fine condition with no foxing and a few very minor tears to the edge of 5 of the pages. Overall, this is a highly desirable copy of a notoriously fragile book rarely found in this condition. Cited in both The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century by Andrew Roth and The Photobook: A History by Parr and Badger. Bookseller Inventory # 000072

Item Description: James Thrall Soby: Hartford, Connecticut and Random House: NY nd (?), 1934. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 12.5 x 9.5", plain red buckram w/original wraps cover bound in, contents worn, soiled, hinges loose. "With a portrait by Picasso, texts by Andre Breton, Paul Eluard, Rrose Selavy, Tristan Tzara". "Second Edition" WITH A CLICHÉ-VERRE SILVER PRINT BOOKPLATE "1948 GREETINGS FROM JULIET AND MAN RAY", INSCRIBED "TO GEORGE HODEL" AND SIGNED BY MAN RAY, ADDING 1949. Now for the good part. George Hodel was a Hollywood, CA physician who, in a book written by his son, Steve, was accused of being the "Black Dahlia" murderer. According to Steve, the awkward pose of the body (of Elizabeth Short) was in imitation of the pose of the model in Man Ray's photograph "The Minotaur", though critics of the theory state that it was unlikely Dr. Hodel was familiar with the photograph. While the photo is not in this book, this is proof that Dr. Hodel was familiar with Man Ray and his work! The mystery thickens!!! A one-of-a-kind piece. Signed by Author(s).
