The first edition (published in 1848) was hastily prepared to sup ply a pressing want. Its plan, having been generally approved, has not been altered, although the work has been to a great extent twice rewritten, and the geographical range extended. The second edition, much altered, appeared in 185 6. The third and fourth were merely revised upon the stereotype plates, and some pages added, especially to the latter. Boston and Cambridge, thick octavo, lxxii, 710 p., plus 8 p. of publisher’s ads at front and 1 p. author’s advertisement at rear. ***Content: Harvard professor Asa Gray (1810-1888) is widely recognized as the most notable American botanist of the 19th century. A prolific author, he also was a colleague and supporter of Charles Darwin. This comprehensive and exhaustively detailed volume is regarded as his most important botanical work, and many later editions were published. Known simply as “Gray’s Manual”, this treatise remains a standard in the field. ***Condition: A VG copy in the original blindstamped brown cloth, with a gilt-lettered backstrip bearing a blindstamped flower and other decoration. The covers are sound, but have wear to the extremities and spine ends; spine lettering bold and bright. Joints expertly strengthened, hinges solid, binding firm. The text pages are supple, fresh, clean and bright; very few pages are lightly toned where small plant specimens were inserted. This copy is from the library of Arthur Latham Perry (1830-1905), a prominent American economist and professor at Williams College; his inked signature is on the first page of the publisher’s ads. No other previous ownership indications. This is a very nice copy of a scarce and important treatise. BMNH 709. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost. Item Description: Boston and Cambridge, James Munroe, 1848. 8vo (19.7 x 12.0 cm) lxxii, 710, [i] pp. Original blind stamped cloth with a floral vignette on the boards, and the spine with gilt title. = Rare first edition of this important botanical manual on North America by this eminent botanist Asa Gray (1810-1888) who was professor at Harvard University. The Manual went through five editions during Gray's lifetime. On the first blank the book has been signed by Wesley Osborn of the Rensselaer Institute at Troy, NY. For some reason, a nice engraving of Mandan Women, not belonging to this work, but engraved after an aquatint by Karl Bodmer "Ptihn-Tak-Ochatä, dance of the Mandan Women" from the book "Maximilian, Prince of Wied’s Travels in the Interior of North America, during the years 1832-1834", pasted on the rear pastedown.
