Item Description: Longmans, Green, and Company, New York, 1908. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good to Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Rev. Smith is Rector of St. Thomas' Church, Washington, D.C. "In looking over the various communicant manuals in existence, none has ever appeared to the author of this compilation to be quite fitted to meet the needs of his own people; doubtless because all or nearly all of these manuals, being of English origin, have been prepared from an English standpoint. To be sure they have been 'adapted' for American use, but unfortunately in no case has the adaptation gone further than the substitution of the language of our Prayer Book for that of the English wherever there are verbal differences between the two. But something more than this is needed." 79 pages. Book is in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. No dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 001724

Item Description: Schermerhorn, Bancroft,, New York, 1865. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. First Edition; First Printing. vi, 254 pages; Publisher's dark blue-green cloth, with decoratively stamped title in gilt on the front cover and a handsome publisher's device in gilt on the rear cover. Spine worn and damaged, missing the upper quarter, with some faint white stains (paint?) to the covers, hinges cracking but holding soundly. A copy showing significant wear, but with an interesting provenance: the front paste down endpaper has the ink signature of the Rev. R[obert] W. Goff. Dr. Goff was a graduate of Lynchburg Theological Seminary in Virginia. Following the awarding of his degree, he was appointed pastor of the Rivermont Bapist Church in that city. In 1909, Dr. Goff was called north to the pastorate of the White Rock Bapist Church (not the historic White Rock Church from Lynchburg, but a newer church which had just moved to 707-709 North Forty-sixth Street, Philadelphia) -- where he served until his death in 1931. During those decades, his preaching and community dynamism made the White Rock Baptist Church into "the spiritual powerhouse for the African American community of West Philadelphia" -- [to borrow a phrase from the White Rock Church's current website]. Tipped to the front paste-down, under this signature, there is a typed note: "Donated / From the library of the late / Rev. Robert W. Goff by his widow / 5034 Aspen Street / Philadlphia / Pennsylvania / June 2, 1934." Anne B. Goff donated this book to a fellow Virginia-born Baptist -- Nannie Helen Burroughs [1878-1961], who founded the National Training School for Women and Girls in Washington DC in 1909. Burroughs was the daughter of John Burroughs, who had been born a "free person of color" and who later became an itinerant Baptist preacher. Her mother Jennie had been born into slavery, and worked before and after the Civil War as a cook. Following the death of her husband, Jennie Burroughs moved with her daughters to Washington D.C. in 1883 so that Nannie could be educated in the capitol city's schools. (She eventually graduated from the historic "Colored High School" on M Street -- later better known as "Paul Laurence Dunbar High School"). Rev. Goff may have known Nannie Burroughs as early as 1900, when she delivered a speech which won nation-wide attention in African-American circles: "How the Sisters Are Hindered from Helping," at the National Baptist Convention. Two years earlier, Burroughs had been one of the founders of the National Association of Colored Women (NACW). During the decade before founding her school, Miss Burroughs lived in Louisville, Kentucky, serving as bookkeeper and editorial secretary for the Foreign Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention. Her National Training School for Women and Girls did concentrate on vocational training, as the name suggests. But Burroughs prepared her students for a wider range of possibilities, with training made available in shoe repair, barbering, and gardening, as well as the more expected domestic and secretarial skills. Miss Burroughs also helped instill pride in her charges by creating a department of Negro History in her National Training school, and this department oversaw required courses in African-American history and culture. Religious training and practice remained important to the founder; Burroughs summarized her approach as a program of "the three B's": the Bible, the bath, and the broom. Her school was renamed in 1934 as the National Trades and Professional School for Women. After her death in 1961, it was again renamed -- "Nannie Helen Burroughs School" in her honor. Also, she received an unusual honor in her adopted city where a major street in the Northeast Washington DC of today bears the name: Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue NE. We acquired this volume from the school; unlike the other books we have from this source, there was no institutional rubber stamp applied, and it may be that Miss Burroughs retained this copy for her own use. Tucked in to this volume, there are several leaves and parts of leaves. Bookseller Inventory # 41679
