A few small stains on front board, slight wear along spine and at corners. Previous owner's stamp on front and rear pastedowns. Internally neat and clean. A very good copy. A detailed work of lepidoptery, describing more than 600 butterflies and moths found in North America. Each entry gives the characteristics of the specimen, also locating their habitats and the times in which they flourish. Each of the colored plates contains illustrations of several types of butterflies. Trained as a taxidermist, Maynard held a lifelong interest in natural history. He was an experimenter in color printing and supervised all the color work for his numerous books, including THE BIRDS OF FLORIDA (1872-78), THE BIRDS OF EASTERN NORTH AMERICA (1881), and EGGS OF NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS (1890).
