A detailed map of North America From Alaska (named the Russian Possessions) to the tip of South America. Explorations and discoveries by Captain Franklin in the Arctic are noted. James Wyld was successor to William Faden, one of the luminaries of late eighteenth century publishing in England. Wyld maintained the high standard of graphic and factual excellence that had been established by his predecessor and his maps are among the finest published in the early nineteenth century. He thanks him for his 'New Map of Central America', which he will 'transmit to Washington, where I believe it will be thought, that you have made ample provision for the "Mosquito Indians"'. Scarce map of Central America, extending from southern Mexico to modern Colombia, omitting the northern Yucatan peninsula, highlighting the many conflicting boundary claims of the region. Detailed insets show the 'Isthmus of Panama' and various cross-sections of the country between Atlantic and Pacific, to illustrate the proposed routes to link Atlantic and Pacific, with a table of distances, the routes across the Isthmus of Panama and Isthmus of Darien being the shortest. This fourth state has been revised to show the international arbitration by representatives of the British and American governments to resolve the boundary dispute between Nicaragua and Costa Rica in 1852, and the boundary of 'Grey Town or San Juan de Nicaragua', laid down in 1852. Item Description: London: James Wyld, 1845. Map dimensions 108.5 x 80 cm, overall dimensions 115 x 85 cm. Large folding map of the continent, with original handcolouring demarcating the national boundaries. Dissected into 48 sections and mounted on linen, marbled paper to the folded end sections, housed within original cloth slipcase, publisher's printed label bearing a handwritten brief title to the upper board. Some minor wear to the slipcase, an excellent, bright example of the map. An English rendering of Delarochette's map on 8 sheets was first published by Faden, Wyld's predecessor as Royal Geographer, in 1807. This reduced version isn't dated, but the British Library list an example, stated "Second Edition", with an attributed date of 1850. Bookseller Inventory # 22039

James Wyld (1812 - 1887), well-known english geographer and map seller, was successor to William Faden. On this interesting map published around 1860, the lines of very first railways in South America is drawn, for instance in Brazil, Argentina and Chile. Engraved cartouche on the lower right part.
