Munster's map of Greece & Turkey, based upon Claudius Ptolemy which appeared in his "Geographia Universalis", first published in 1540 which includes the region west of the Black Sea and north of the Aegean and Adriatic Seas. The Geographia was a new and important edition of Ptolemy, with redesigned maps and revised text by Münster. On verso text with decorative woodcut border. Sebastian Munster (1488 - 1552), was an eminent mathematician and geographer, as well as professor of Hebrew at Basel University & produced his own version of Ptolemy's Geographia in 1540, after having produced a more basic world representation in conjunction with Hans Holbein in 1532. Uncolored, woodblock map with Latin text on verso, 13.5 x 10.5 inches.

Ptolemaic map of ancient Sarmatia located northeast of the Black Sea by the famous mapmaker Sebastian Munster. Map shows the european part of Russia and the Baltic Regions, from Scandinavia to the Black Sea with the peninsula Krim.The highly decorative wood engraving to the verso was probably cut by Hans Holbein. Later hand-colouring with good, wide margins. In near fine, clean condition.
