Item Description: Johnson Meyers Publishers, 1962. PAPERBACK. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. B0007F7DYY 1962 first edition Johnson Meyers Publishers (San Francisco, California), 7 1/8 x 10 1/4 inches tall stapled paperbound, copiously illustrated in full color with the Keane's artwork, 8 pp. plus 24 pages of color plates. Mild to moderate soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers. Half-inch abrasion to front cover. A couple of pages with slight creasing. Otherwise, a good to very good copy. ~LLL~ Walter Stanley Keane (1915-2000) was an American plagiarist, who became famous in the 1960s, as the claimed painter of a series of widely reproduced paintings depicting vulnerable waifs with enormous eyes. The paintings were in fact painted by his wife Margaret Keane (b. 1927). When she made this fact public, Walter Keane retaliated with a USA Today article that again claimed he had done the work. In 1986 Margaret Keane sued Walter and USA Today. In the subsequent slander suit, the judge demanded that the litigants paint a painting in the courtroom, but Walter declined, citing a sore shoulder. Margaret then produced a painting for the jurors in 53 minutes. The jury awarded her damages of $4 million. Bookseller Inventory # LLL-0471-7263

Item Description: Johnson Meyer, Redwood City, California, 1964. Cloth. Book Condition: VG+/NF. Dust Jacket Condition: VG/VG+. First Printing. Two unnumbered volumes in bottomless slipcase. The slipcase is in Good condition showing edgewear, scraping, and sporadic bubbling. The first volume (Walter Keane] is Near Fine: the off-white boards with green titles are unworn, the binding and hinges are secure and straight, and the pages are clean and unmarked. There are glassine covers on some of the color plates. The VG (or better) dust jacket is bright and whole whole showing just light edgewear at the spine tips. There is a glassine dust wrapper protector that is chipped and torn. The second volume [MDH Margaret Keane] is Near Fine: the off-white boards with green titles are unworn, the binding and hinges are secure and straight, and the pages are clean and unmarked except for a very light indentation on the first few pages. There are glassine covers on some of the color plates. The Near Fine dust jacket is bright and whole. There is a glassine dust wrapper protector that is whole showing some wrinkling and edgewear. The publisher is listed on the dust jackets as "Johnson Meyers", but the copyright page indicates that the publisher is "Johnson Meyer". This 2 book set is infamous due to Walter Keane taking credit for his wife's (Margaret Keane) work. Many of the plates in the Walter Keane book are undoubtably his, like the self-portrait "Backstage" shown on the back of the dust jacket, but all of the plates with the "big eyes" theme are actually Margaret's work, and when you compare these plates in the Walter Keane book to those in the Margaret Keane book, the pretense is obvious (but judge for yourself). Margaret Keane left Walter on November 1964, and then divorced him in 1965 (this book was published in 1964) and publicly proclaimed in 1970 that she was the painter of all the "Big Eyes" paintings, and publicly challenged Walter to a "Paint Out" that he declined to attend, instead publishing an article in "USA Today" asserting that he was the real artist of the "Big Eyes" work. Margaret sued USA Today and Walter for slander and won her case when she produced a "Big Eyes" painting in front of the judge and jury in 53 minutes, while Walter declined to produce one (for comparsion) at the judge's request. Margaret Keane's story was made into the film "Big Eyes" in 2014 by Tim Burton (himself a collector of Keane's work). Walter Keane is referred to in Wikipedia as an "American Plagarist". Overseas buyers please request a shipping quote before ordering this heavy 2 book set. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Trade. Bookseller Inventory # 001078

Item Description: Johnson Meyer Publishing Company. Book Condition: Very Good. Condition: Very Good; Two volumes in buff cloth with minimal wear. Minimal wear to jackets, as well: some slight rubbing to edges and a small intact tear at the spine tail of the Margaret volume, about 1/4 in. Prints and glassine covers intact. Tear to the lower right corner of the introduction page in the Walter volume. Slipcase good overall, with moderate shelfwear, some chipping at edges, and a piece torn/missing from the bottom edge. A curious set with spurious commentary by the plagiarist Walter, written before the Keanes' separation and before Margaret was revealed as the true author of Walter's work.
