A children's book about two lambs "intended to instruct you in some very important knowledge. The lambs are very much like children, which they are intended to represent. The Good Shepherd is the Lord Jesus . the roaring lion is the chief wicked spirit, called Satan . The Goats are wicked people, who take much pains to make children as bad as they are themselves" (p. [4]). The book goes on to instruct its reader to consult a "Sunday School teacher, or your father, or mother, or some other kind of pious friend" for further moral instruction. The volume ends with a transcription of The Lord's Prayer. 12mo (5.75" by 3.5"), pp. 36, with in-text illustrations and wood engraved frontispiece. Sewn in slightly later (or contemporary?) coated paper wrappers, spine reinforced with brown cloth. Very good. Some light toning/foxing. Wrappers chipped.

Cloth. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). The third edition of this nineteenth century Children's book. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. With an illustrated frontispiece of the faithful little girl. No author attributed to title page although author is believed to be Lucy Lyttleton Cameron, a British magazine editor and a writer for children. Her work had a tendency to circle around religious themes. However, her focus differed to other work of the time. Cameron's stories gave more emphasis to the individual and their objectives. This led to their fiction being popular worldwide. In original paper covered boards. Externally, worn. Chipping to the spine and extremities. Handling marks to boards. Severe loss to backstrip with evidence of repair to rear joint and spine. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Frontispiece has offset to title page. Pages are generally bright with the odd spot throughout. Good. book.
