Item Description: Madrid, en la Imprenta Nacional, 1837. Encuadernación de tapa dura. Book Condition: Muy bien. Bookseller Inventory # 1152

Item Description: Barcelona: Maria Teresa Vendréll y Texidó, [1761]., 1761. 4to., (7 6/8 x 5 4/8 inches). 5 fine engraved folding plates by Francisco Boix and Ignacio Valls after Francisco and Manuel Tramullas (the largest with short tear at the gutter repaired), 27 woodcut emblematic illustrations in text, woodcut initial. Contemporary vellum. Provenance: The Paul and Marianne Gourary Collection of Illustrated Fete Books "Splendid Ceremonies", with their small bookplate on the front paste-down. "IN 22 YEARS OF MARRIAGE, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME AMALIA DISPLEASES ME" (Charles III, on the death of his Queen) First edition, and A FINE AND BRIGHT COPY OF A VERY RARE WORK. Commemorating the funeral rites and ceremonies in 1761 for Maria Amalia, Queen, consort and beloved wife of Charles III (1716-1788), King of Spain. Although the marriage was arranged and Maria Amalia only 14 on their wedding day, theirs was a happy union resulting in the birth of 13 children, 7 of whom survived to adulthood. Maria is reported to have been a very cultivated woman: she is credited with introducing the production of porcelain to Naples. She was influential in the construction of the Caserta Palace, certainly the largest palace and probably the largest building erected in Europe in the 18th-century. Maria Amalia was also a fashionably heavy tobacco smoker: and only a year after Charles' ascendance to the Spanish throne, and their return to Madrid from Naples, Maria died tragically from tuberculosis. The five fine engraved plates by Francisco Boix and Ignacio Valls after designs by Francisco and Manuel Tramullas include a splendid representation of Maria Amalia's catafalque. The "Oracion funebre" at end is by Ramón Foxà (1729-1796) and has a separate divisional title-page. With the license permitting publication of the "Oracion funebre" dated 27 January 1762 pasted on the verso of the final leaf. Also with 27 fine woodcut armorial devices and emblems of provinces, countries, and continents under Spanish rule, and last most importantly representing the Spanish colonies of America, with the motto "plus ultra" (further beyond) adopted by Charles I, the first King of Spain, in the 16th-century to encourage his explorers to venture beyond the Pillars of Hercules (ie Straits of Gibraltar) to the New World. It had been Charles III policy to support the American Revolutionaries against the British during the American War of Independence, which saw the return of Minorca and Florida to Spanish rule. Palau 251917 ("raro"); Vinet 572 ("fort rare"). Catalogued by Kate Hunter. Bookseller Inventory # 002258
