About this Item: M.K.M. Art Institute, San Antonio, 1968. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. B/W Photographs (illustrator). First Edition. SUBTITLED : ` A Biography 1883 - 1950'. Although born in Ohio and raised in Kansas, Jessie Marion Koogler thoroughly adopted her `home town' of San Antonio, Texas. SHe was an early and avid collector of art and supported and encouraged young painting students all of her life. She, herself, studied at the Art institute of Chicago. Her art collection, with its dominant Mexican and American Southwest themes, and her palatial home, Sunset Hill, eventually became the basis for the Art Institute in San Antonio. A 97 page retrospective on oil, money, teaching, and art in the American Southwest. Cond : Boards are two tone purple in faux leather. Gilt lettering on face and spine. D.J. is white with purple decoration and white lettering. D.J. graphic is a sculpted portrait of Jessie Marion Koogler. D.J. is much rubbed and has one sm. tear. Volume colours bright, binding tight, book is CLEAN. End-papers are golden with `peacock tiles' (see page 19). No names, marks, bumps, nor stains. Almost giftable !! Quote (p. 41) : " `She always had the sympathy of the artist at hand because she herself was an artist, ' Umlauf recalled. ` She never, for example, tried to change my work nor to make suggestions that would reflect her own ideas rather than mine.
