Item Description: The Ann Arbor Press: Ann Arbor, MI nd (1905?), 1905. Illustr, 6.5 x 5, printed stapled brown wraps, unpag (16 pp). Covers have light wear, creasing, tiny tears, light scattered spotting, a few pages roughly opened, staples rusty, center section attached by only one staple (instead of two), light creasing else good. Herman C. Markham of Ann Arbor, Michigan, enjoyed filling his house with roses from his large rose garden but was unhappy with the types of vases available, so in the mid- 1880s bagan to experiment with clay from his yard. In 1905, his son Kenneth joined and that was the year commercial production of Markham pottery began. In 1913, the company moved to National City, California to have better access to the clay that was needed for pieces. In 1915, the pottery received a gold medal from the Panama-California Exposition that was held in San Diego. Markham produced art vases, mantel tile, steins and water pitchers, ornamental tea sets and sundials. Operations ceased in 1921 when the attempt to raise new capital failed. This book contains an extract from an illustrated article on Markham Pottery by Lillian Gray Jarvie and published originally in the November, 1905 issue of the "Sketch Book" per the NUC.
