Item Description: Gay & Bird, London, 1897. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First British Edition. This first British edition of 'Marm Lisa' from the author of 'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm', was published by Gay & Bird of London and dated 1897. The book measures approx. 20 x 13 cms (7.5" x 5") and has 252 pages, plus a 32 page publisher's catalogue. The condition of the book, in my opinion, is very good, with sound covers, quite clean and unfaded and just minor wear to the extremities. The binding is tight and the text - on thick stock, is clean and free from foxing, which is restricted to the endpapers. There are a few chips out of the top edges of one of the front free endpapers and the half-title page. There is an 1896 inscription on the front free and a 1978 one on the fixed endpaper. A sound copy, all in all. Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923 received her education through "dame school", home study, district school, female seminary, and academy, later attending a kindergarten training class. Wiggin started teaching kindergarten in 1877, and founded San Francisco's Silver Street training school for poor children in 1880. She supported kindergarten movement throughout her life. She co-wrote several books with her sister, Nora Archibald Smith. Out of her travels to Europe in the 1890s came books for adults, including ¿Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm¿, Wiggin's most famous book, written in 1903. In 1904, Bowdoin College presented an honorary degree to Wiggin, only the second such degree the College granted to a woman. Soon after, she founded the Society of Bowdoin Women, a social and fundraising organization. As in all her works of prose fiction, in 'Marm Lisa' Kate Douglas Wiggin shows a real gift for depicting character and an original vein of humour. A rare and valuable addition to any collection of 19th century women's fiction. Bookseller Inventory # 000168

Hardcover - Inscribed by Author - Fine - very clean, no marks, very clean inside, very clean bright yellow boards with lack designs and lettering, clean spine no sunning, no dustjacket - from a private collection - Kate Douglas Wiggin (September 28, 1856-August 24, 1923) / Kate Douglas (Mrs. George C. Riggs) Wiggin) was an American educator and author of children's stories, most notably the classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the Silver Street Free Kindergarten). With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labour.During 1895 Kate Wiggin married a New York City businessman, George Christopher Riggs, who became her staunch supporter as her success increased. Her literary output included popular books for adults; with her sister, Nora A. Smith, she published scholarly work on the educational principles of Friedrich Froebel: Froebel's Gifts (1895), Froebel's Occupations (1896), and Kindergarten Principles and Practice (1896);[2] and she wrote the classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1903), as well as the 1905 best-seller Rose o' the River. Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm became an immediate bestseller; both it and Mother Carey's Chickens (1911) were adapted to drama. Houghton Mifflin collected her writings in ten volumes in 1917. Inscribed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 20874.220604
