Item Description: 1903. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Please see any and all photos connected with this listing. No Dustjacket. A bit scuffed but all pages intact and legible. Good reading copy. Clean. No store stamps. --- --- AN EPIC POEM --- The poem tells how Lord Marmion, a favourite of Henry VIII of England, lusts for Clara de Clare, a rich woman. He and his mistress, Constance De Beverley, forge a letter implicating Clara's fiancé, Sir Ralph De Wilton, in treason. Constance, a dishonest nun, hopes that her aid will restore her to favour with Marmion. When De Wilton loses the duel he claims in order to defend his honour against Marmion, he is obliged to go into exile. Clara retires to a convent rather than risk Marmion's attentions. Constance's hopes of a reconciliation with Marmion are dashed when he abandons her; she ends up being walled up alive in the Lindisfarne convent for breaking her vows. She takes her revenge by giving the Abbess who is one of her three judges documents that prove De Wilton's innocence. De Wilton, having returned disguised as a pilgrim, follows Marmion to Edinburgh where he meets the Abbess, who gives him the exonerating documents. When Marmion's host, the Earl of Angus is shown the documents, he arms De Wilton and accepts him as a knight again. De Wilton's plans for revenge are overturned by the Battle of Flodden. Marmion dies on the battlefield, while De Wilton displays heroism, regains his honour, retrieves his lands, and marries Clara. . . Bookseller Inventory # 25509

Item Description: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2014. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. In the 19th century, the world s best known writer was probably Sir Walter Scott, who was one of the first writers to have a following across the globe in his lifetime. The Scottish writer still pops up in literature classes across the world, with people instantly familiar with titles like Ivanhoe, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Bride of Lammermoor, and more. Scott is often considered the inventor of the modern historical novel, and his style was imitated throughout the 19th century. His legacy has been debated ever since, but everyone can agree that he has remained influential. Marmion is an epic poem Scott wrote about the Battle of Flodden Field. Published in 1808, Scott actually trained with military forces to try to learn the cavalry movements and perfect his descriptions. Bookseller Inventory # APC9781502324979

The Lay of the Last Minstrel, Scott s first romantic tale, was published in January, 1805, and won for its author his first great success. The writing of Marmion was begun in November, 1806. Constable offered as publisher to pay at once a thousand guineas for the copyright, when he heard that the new poem was begun, though he had not yet seen a line of it. Miller and Murray joined, each taking a fourth part of the venture, and John Murray said, We both view it as honourable, profitable, and glorious to be concerned in the publication of a new poem by Walter Scott. Scott, thirty-five years old, had the impulse upon his mind of a preceding great success, took more than usual pains, and thoroughly enjoyed the writing. Bookseller Inventory # APC9781514888445

Item Description: Dodo Press, United Kingdom, 2008. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (1771-1832) was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time. In some ways Scott was the first author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers all over Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and specifically Scottish literature. Famous titles include: Ivanhoe, The Lady of the Lake and Waverley. At the age of 25 he began dabbling in writing, translating works from German, his first publication being rhymed versions of ballads by Burger in 1796. He then published a three-volume set of collected Scottish ballads, The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border. This was the first sign of his interest in Scottish history from a literary standpoint. Amongst his other works are Marmion (1808), The Heart of Mid-Lothian (1818), Rob Roy (1818), The Bride of Lammermoor (1819), The Fortunes of Nigel (1822), St. Ronan s Well (1823), The Betrothed (1825), Kenilworth (1821), The Mirror and Quentin Durward. Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Sir Walter Scott s love of the country induced him, after his marriage in 1797, to settle in a cottage at the pretty village of Lasswade, near Edinburgh. Four years after leaving this district he took Mr. Morritt of Rokeby to see the little dwelling, telling him that, though not worth looking at, it was our first house when newly married, and many a contrivance it had to make it comfortable. He then enumerated various devices, by which he had secured for Mrs. Scott and himself what seemed to both, at the time, additional convenience and elegance in and about their home. His reminiscences culminated in an account of an arch over the gate-way, which he had constructed by fastening together the tops of two convenient willows and placing above them a cross made of two sticks. This is very beautiful and characteristic; and there is much freshness and charm in the further picture of the young cottagers rejoicing over the success of the arrangements. To be sure, Scott concluded, it is not much of a lion to show a stranger; but I wanted to see it again myself, for I assure you after I constructed it, Mamma (Mrs. Scott) and I both of us thought it so fine, we turned out to see it by moonlight, and walked backwards from it to the cottage-door in admiration of our own magnificence and its picturesque effect. It was his way to invest his circumstances with an interest over and above what intrinsically belonged to them, and to prompt his friends to a share in his delight.
