Item Description: London - John Sharpe, 1809. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. An illustrated edition of Scott's epic poem, MarmionRebacked in brown leather with blind stamped boards and gilt borders and lettering. Nameplate belonging to Robert Wardenon the front pastedown. Illustrated with engravings by Richard. Westall Esq. R. A. Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, (1771 1832) was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time. In some ways Scott was the first English-language author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers all over Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of The Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. Marmion is an epic poem by Walter Scott about the Battle of Flodden Field (1513) that was first published in 1808. Scott started writing Marmion, his second major work, in November 1806. When Archibald Constable, the publisher, learnt of this he offered a thousand guineas for the copyright unseen. William Miller and John Murray each agreed to take a 25%25 share in the project. Murray observed: We both view it as honourable, profitable, and glorious to be concerned in the publication of a new poem by Walter Scott. Scott later said that he thoroughly enjoyed writing the work. He told his son-in-law, Lockhart, Oh, man, I had many a grand gallop among these bracs when I was thinking of Marmion. Richard Westall (1765 1836) was an English painter. Westall was the more successful of two half-brothers (both sons of a Benjamin Westall, from Norwich), who each became painters. Westall was a prolific illustrator of books of poets and writers including Sir Walter Scott and Oliver Goldsmith. Byron - who greatly admired his work, stated that the brush has beat the poetry. He also illustrated editions of the Bible, including one with John Martin. His oil painting Christ Crowned with Thorns is the altarpiece at All Souls, Langham Place, London. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is some wear to the extremities including some bumping and rubbing with some loss to the leather. Internally the pages are bright with the occasional spot, which are most prominent on the first and last few pages and mild offsetting from the plates. Overall the condition of the book is very good.
