Full-Leather. Condition: Very Good. Full leather with gilded spine title and decoration. Small 5" x 3" ; 219pp. Pages 148-219 are notes on the Cantos. The title page has an ornate but faint stamp, with initials and the surname of "Dunnell" found on the margin of one page in the text block. Other than the Scottish origins of the name, no further information was found. This later copy was almost certainly a student's copy as there is a name written across the front cover and a faint inscription inside. The last blank and pastedown have also been marked with pencil and calligraphy pen. Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field is a historical romance in verse of 16th-century Scotland and England by Sir Walter Scott, originally published in 1808. Other than the afore mentioned, there are no markings. The pages have some staining especially along the edges but the text remains quite readable. A nice copy with some wear along the board edges. ; 8vo.
Published by John Murray and Archibald Constable, London; Edinburgh, 1810
Leather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). A lovely edition of Marmion, an epic poem by Walter Scott about the Battle of Flodden Field in 1513. The fifth edition. First published in 1808. Although it did not find favour with contemporary critics, the public enthusiasm for Scott's work was undimmed and the poem remained popular for over a century. With introductory letters to Scott's friends, which open each Canto and with many notes to rear of volume for each canto. With previous owner's ink inscriptions to title page. In a diced calf binding. Externally, sound with slight wear to extremities. Front joint starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean but with the odd spot. Very Good. book.
