About this Item: Lisbon, Na Impressão Regia, 1815., 1815. 4°, later boards of glossy black embossed paper, narrow strip of cloth at spine (spine chipped off, joints weak); early blue wrappers bound in. Light foxing on final 2 leaves. Internally fine, overall good to very good condition. Tag (bookseller's?) removed from corner of front pastedown. 48 pp. *** Second edition (?) of a work written in 1772 and presumably published that year, although we have seen no copies of such an edition. Innocêncio noted that it had been plagiarized at least twice, and that copies were rare: "Não será facil encontrar de venda exemplares no mercado, eé de certo muito menos conhecida do que merecia sel-o." In 1772 the Marquês de Pombal (1699-1782) was the most powerful man in Portugal. Oliveira focuses on how he stimulated trade and manufactures (pp. 18-25), but also mentions his involvement in laws, education, science, and the Seven Years' War ("O demonio da guerra, que trazendo do Canadá as primeiras faiscas, havia ateado na Europa hum inextinguivel incendio.," p. 39).Francisco Xavier de Oliveira (not to be confused with the author of the same name usually known as the Cavalheiro Oliveira) taught rhetoric and poetry at the Collegio Real de Nobres in Lisbon and was for years a censor at the Meza do Desembargo do Paço. He died at an advanced age in 1823 or 1824.*** Innocêncio III, 93; IX, 392-3. Porbase locates four copies, all at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Copac repeats British Library. About this Item: Lisbon, Na Regia Officina Typografica, n.d. (1776)., 1776. 4°, contemporary plain beige wrappers (small burn hole in upper wrapper, stitched, text block edges sprinkled red. Woodcut arms of the Marquês de Pombal on title page. Woodcut initial on p. [3]. Overall in fine condition. 14 pp., (1 blank l.). *** Second edition, rare, of a work which first appeared in 1774. The verses by Cruz e Silva are indicated by an asterisk; more than half the poems are so noted. These are among the few poems published during the lifetime of this major poet, the overwhelming majority of whose work appeared posthumously.Of humble origins (his father was a carpenter who abandoned the family to emigrate to Brazil, while his mother supported them working as a seamstress), Cruz e Silva (Lisbon in 1731-Rio de Janeiro, 1799), studied law at Coimbra. He co-founded the Arcadia Ulyssiponense in 1756 and, while serving as a military judge, developed a formidable reputation as a lyric poet and satirist. His poem O Hyssope was based on the quarrel between the bishop of Elvas, D. Lourenço de Lancastre, and the dean, D. José Carlos de Lara, which he witnessed first-hand while resident in Elvas from 1764 to 1774. Bell recounts the tale that Cruz e Silva "was summoned to read his satire to the all-powerful [Marquês de] Pombal in the presence of the infuriated bishop, and that the poem proved too much for the gravity of the minister, who appointed him a judge in Rio de Janeiro" in 1776 (Portuguese Literature pp. 273-4). O Hyssope was a source of inspiration for Francisco de Mello Franco's famous burlesque poem Reino da estupidez. Martins de Carvalho notes (p. 7) that many contemporaries considered O Hyssope "muito superior" to Pope's Rape of the Lock.In July 1790 Cruz e Silva was sent again to Brazil to assist in trying the leaders of the Republican conspiracy in Minas, in which Tomás António Gonzaga, Claudio Manuel da Costa, Manuel Inácio da Silva Alvarenga and other men of letters were involved, and in December 1792 he became chancellor of the Relação in Rio. Six years later he was named councillor of the Conselho Ultramarino, but did not live to return home.Gomes de Carvalho was one of the four founders of the Arcadia Ulyssiponense in 1756, along with Cruz e Silva, Manuel Nicolau Esteves Negrão and Pedro António Corrêa Garção. His date of birth was probably between 1728 and 1732; he died in Lisbon, 1800. With a law degree from Coimbra, he held various high government posts under D. Maria II, and was a knight of the Order of Christ and a member of the Academia Real das Sciencias de Lisboa.*** See Imprensa Nacional p. 102 (without collation; no copy in the library-archive of the Imprensa Nacional, which does possess the 1774 edition: listed as item 120, p. 291). See Innocêncio I, 124; VII, 373; VIII, 128; XXII, 236 and 532; Aditamentos p. 34 for biographical and bibliographical information about António Diniz da Cruz e Silva, and an appreciation of his dithyrambs, but without mention of this specific work; also VII, 313-4 (citing the present work only as appearing in volume III of the Obras of Cruz e Silva), and XIX, 254 (citing the 1774 edition of the present work), for biographical and bibliographical information regarding Theotonio Gomes de Carvalho, but without mention of the present edition. For the reasons stated above, the edition of Lisboa: Regia Officina Typografica, 1766 mentioned in Porbase (six copies, all in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal) is also an impossibility; Porbase locates two copies of the 1776 edition: in the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal and the Biblioteca João Paulo II-Universidade Católica Portuguesa. No edition located in Copac. Seller Inventory # 25514

About this Item: Rio de Janeiro, Na Typographia de J.E.S. Cabral, 1843., 1843. 8°, disbound. In good to very good condition. viii pp., (1 l.), 106 pp. *** First Brazilian Edition. The preface is dated Porto 1839. The work had its premier in the theater on the Rua dos Condes, Lisbon, on 24 November 1840. The earliest published edition seems to be Lisbon, 1842.The action of the play, which begins immediately following the great earthquake of 1 November 1755, encompasses the execution of the Tavoras, the expulsion of the Jesuits, the death of Father Malagrida, the death of D. José I, and the incompatibility of Pombal with D. Maria I, which lead to his dismissal. The author, born in Génoa in 1807, arrived in Portugal in 1837, and returned to Italy shortly before his death in 1848. A noted figure in the life of the Portuguese theater of his day, he wrote a number of successful plays in Portuguese and had an uncommon way of treating history on the stage.*** Author not located in Innocêncio, probably because he was born in Italy. See Grande enciclopédia, XXI, 319; also Sousa Bastos, Dicionario do theatro portuguez, p. 240. Not located in Porbase, which lists 7 other works by this author published between 1837 and 1848. There is a Lisbon 1842 edition in the online inventory of the historical theater collection of Osório Mateus. Not located in Copac, which cites a single copy of another work by the author at the University of Leeds. Not located in Library of Congress Online Catalog, which cites a copy of another work by the author. Not located in ICCU. Not located in Hollis, which cites the Lisbon 1842 edition. About this Item: Lisbon, Na Regia Officina Typografica, 1773., 1773. 8°, contemporary mottled sheep (minor wear at extremities), spine gilt with floral ornaments and raised bands in five compartments, crimson leather lettering piece, gilt letter. Woodcut arms of the Marquês de Pombal, the dedicatee, on title page. Woodcut headpieces, tailpieces, and initials. Light stain in upper margin throughout, larger toward the end but never touching the text. In very good condition. (8 ll.), 98 pp. *** FIRST EDITION of this treatise (considered important within its field) on the cultivation of mulberry trees and silkworms, covering the best type of soil, best type of mulberry bush, early growth and transplantation, pruning, gathering leaves, treatment of silkworms, and gathering of cocoons. The author notes that he had seen many treatises in French and other languages on sericulture, but none were aimed at those actually engaged in it: "todos mostrão não serem feitos por pessoas, que tenhão conhecimento prático desta cultura, e por isso muito defeituosos, omittindo as principaes advertencias para a sua felicidade, ou tocando-as tanto de passagem, que ficão imperceptiveis" (preliminary leaf 5r). Sericulture in Portugal was strongly advocated by P. Rafael Bluteau (1638-1734), and was encouraged by the government beginning in the 1670s. It was encouraged again under the Marques de Pombal. The author lived near Guarda and devoted himself to agriculture.*** Innocêncio VII, 284. Imprensa Nacional p. 279, no. 80. Not located in NUC. About this Item: Lisbon, Na Regia Officina Typografica, 1773., 1773. 4°, contemporary marbled boards (rubbed; spine gone), text block edges sprinkled red. Woodcut arms of Marquês de Pombal (as Conde de Oeiras) on title page. Woodcut initial. Overall in very good condition. Internally fine to very fine. Engraved armorial eighteenth-century bookplate of the Casa da Annunciada library on verso of title page. 144 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 137. Posto que os exemplares não sejam raros, gosam comtudo de estimação, e não faltou quem conferisse ao auctor a honrosa qualificação de mestre da lingua portugueza."The author was a career official in the Portuguese ministries of Foreign Affairs and War. He took part in many diplomatic missions, and as late as 1818 was serving as secretary to the Portuguese legation in Vienna. He is said to have died in 1829, age 80. His reputation was that of a man of vast wisdom and incorruptible integrity. Provenance: Casa da Annunciada library of João Vicente de Saldanha Oliveira Juzarte Figueira e Sousa, 1º Conde de Rio Maior (1746-1804). The Casa da Annunciada library of the Counts of Rio Maior was one of the best private libraries ever formed in Portugal. Most of it was dispersed through private sale not long after the April 1974 Portuguese revolution.*** Imprensa Nacional 82. Innocêncio IV, 106.
