Item Description: Macmillan, 1907., London:, 1907. 8vo. xii, 110, [2 ads.] pp. Frontis., 1 plate. Original green gilt-stamped cloth. Ownership signature of A.S. Heard. Fine. First edition. Contemporary riposte to the theories of Lowell regarding the possibility of life on Mars and the interpretation of canals on its surface. Written in refute to Percival Lowell's Mars and Its Canals, 1906, this treatise presents the author's belief that life, as we know it, cannot exist elsewhere in the universe. Wallace (1823-1913) was a brilliant creative thinker and naturalist. He rarely avoided controversy and was at his best while collecting evidence against an argument. By doing so, he greatly enriched science. Charles H. Smith noted about this volume, "For many years one of Wallace's least remembered books, Is Mars Habitable? is increasingly being recognized as one of the first examples of the proper application of the scientific method to the study of extraterrestrial atmospheres and geography--that is, as one of the pioneer works in the field of exobiology.".
