Item Description: London: Chapman and Hall 1844, 1844. First Edition. Octavo, pp. (xv) + 624. Illustrated throughout with 38 original plates by Phiz, plus frontispiece, plus engraved title-page. Eleganty bound by Bayntun of Bath in half dark blue crushed morocco gilt. Text is clean, plates with some very light toning; near fine. The reward notice on the signpost of the vignette title is incorrectly printed as 100£ which is often referred to as the first issue, though Hatton and Cleaver suggest that there is no priority and that both plates were used in the serial parts preceding the first edition in book form. A most attractive copy. Charles Dickens' 'Martin Chuzzlewit' is considered the last of his picaresque novels, and was written and serialized in 1843-1844; initial sales of the monthly parts were disappointing, compared to the authors' previous works, so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to America. This allowed the him to portray America, which he had recently visited, as a near wilderness, whose pockets of civilization were filled with deceptive and self-promoting hucksters. The main theme of the novel is selfishness, which is portrayed in a satirical fashion using all the members of the Chuzzlewit family. The novel is also notable for one of Dickens' great villains, Seth Pecksniff, whose rise and fall follows the arc of the novel's plot. Book Collector No.271, 'The Great Illustrators'. Item Description: London: Chapman and Hall, 1844., 1844. Hardcover. First edition. ("100L" variant on the engraved titlepage as opposed to "L100". The illustrated title has the artists error on the reward of placing the "L" (sterling) after the 100 instead of before, which he altered on discovering the error. This issue is much scarcer. Second issue with 14 lines of correction on the errata. Tall 8vo., cont. dark green half calf, cloth, raised bands, elaborate gilt compartments, leather spine label, (xvi), 624pp. There is considerable foxing and browning on the frontispiece, engraved title and several plates, but this is still a very good copy in a very nice binding. Item Description: London: Chapman and Hall, 1844, 1844. Octavo. Original blue diagonal-grain cloth, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down, spine lettered in gilt, sides blocked in blind, new endpapers. Rubbed, some foxing to plates, a very good copy. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title page and 39 plates by "Phiz" (H. K. Browne). First edition, with the textual flaws noted by Smith. This copy has the £100 title plate, not transposed. The transposed plate is often suggested as a first issue point, though Hatton and Cleaver long ago dismissed this, stating that "It is merely one of the five cases in Chuzzlewit of triplicated steels, one of them reading '100£' and the other two '£100' . all three of them in use during the issue in parts." Item Description: London: Chapman and Hall, 1844, 1844. Octavo. Recent brown crushed morocco by Baytun (Riviere), raised bands tooled in gilt with diamond roll, compartment ruled in gilt, titles direct to second and third gilt, remaining compartments with central floral devices gilt, double frame to covers gilt, top edge gilt, palmette roll to turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers. Title-page from first monthly number of Martin Chuzzlewhit bound in after first blank with old repair to lower inner corner and fore edge. Text-leaves lightly toned throughout, the faintest of spotting to the margins of a few plates without affecting images. An excellent copy. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard, vignette title-page and 38 plates all by Phiz (second and third entries on p. xiv, list of plates, transposed and "p. 387" incorrectly substituted for "p. 377", as noted by Smith). First edition. With a piece of light blue wove paper inscribed "With Mr Dickens' compliments" in a contemporary hand mounted to first blank. An uncommonly fresh copy: Eckel notes that "the bound volume usually presents foxed plates". Martin Chuzzlewit originally appeared in 20 numbers, issued in 19 monthly parts (the last part being a double number), from January 1843 to July 1844. It was published in book form on 16 July 1844. The earliest copies noted have a 13-line errata; this was soon expanded to 14 lines, as seen here. Smith I, 7; Eckel pp. 71-73. Bookseller Inventory # 107314
