About this Item: London: Chapman and Hall, 1844., 1844. Hardcover. First edition. ("100L" variant on the engraved titlepage as opposed to "L100". The illustrated title has the artists error on the reward of placing the "L" (sterling) after the 100 instead of before, which he altered on discovering the error. This issue is much scarcer. Second issue with 14 lines of correction on the errata. Tall 8vo., cont. dark green half calf, cloth, raised bands, elaborate gilt compartments, leather spine label, (xvi), 624pp. There is considerable foxing and browning on the frontispiece, engraved title and several plates, but this is still a very good copy in a very nice binding. About this Item: London: Chapman and Hall, 1844, 1844. Octavo. Original blue diagonal-grain cloth, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down, spine lettered in gilt, sides blocked in blind, new endpapers. Rubbed, some foxing to plates, a very good copy. Engraved frontispiece, vignette title page and 39 plates by "Phiz" (H. K. Browne). First edition, with the textual flaws noted by Smith. This copy has the £100 title plate, not transposed. The transposed plate is often suggested as a first issue point, though Hatton and Cleaver long ago dismissed this, stating that "It is merely one of the five cases in Chuzzlewit of triplicated steels, one of them reading '100£' and the other two '£100' . all three of them in use during the issue in parts." Podeschi, A Catalogue of the Gimbel Collection, A71-2; Hatton and Cleaver pp. 183-212; Smith I, 7. Seller Inventory # 116184
