Item Description: D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd. New Delhi, 2003. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. First edition. Sri Devnarayan Katha is an oral narrative extolling the life and deeds of Sri Devanarayan a widely venerated deity of Rajasthan. Bhopas or itinerant costumed singers recite and perform the narrative during all night vigils against the illuminated backdrop of a pad, a long, intricately painted cloth scroll. The Katha provides a fascinating insight into the elaborate and richly complex social history and sacred significance of Sri Devanarayan and his devotees. The transcription presented here is based on recordings made in Eastern Rajasthan in 1991. It uniquely maintains the structure of the original Marwari oral rendering as a dialogue between one of the foremost singers Sri Hukmaram Bhopa and his partner Sri Motaram Gujar. While providing insightful descriptions on how performances are conducted and who the performers are, the introductory chapter of this book (provided in English as well as in Hindi) raises a wide range of innovative issues pertinent to our contemporary understanding of verbal arts and oral traditions : How is the oral recitation structured? What is the relationship between verbal and visual narrative? To what extent is meaning conversationally or dialogically produced within and through the narrative? These and other questions provide a fresh, new perspective on our understanding of the nature of oral traditions and their place within Indian culture. Printed Pages: 432. Item Description: Agam Kala Prakashan, Delhi, 1977. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. First edition. Marwar has had a long and chequared history of Murals. But curiously enough these murals didi note come to the notice of any art critic so far. In this book is presented for the first time a detailed account of these murals and their place in Indian art. After analysing the representative examples of these murals. Dr. Agrawala concludes that a distinctive school of murals painting sprang up in Marwar, Which during the reign of Maharaja Takht Singh (1843-1873) reached the peak of maturity in places like Nagpur and Jodhpur. In spite of Persian and other foreigh influences these murals drew their strenght and beauty from the genius of the place. To convey a sense of their richness and subtlety, Dr. Agrawala offers a close analysis of the style and technique of the murals and thinks that such an analysis is far more rewarding in art criticism than an analysis based on historical records, social accounts and cultural history. Nevertheless the murals have been examined against their backgrounds as well. An indispensable book for anyone who wants to study the art of Marwar murals. Dr. Agrawala has enhanced the value of this book by reproducing a substantial selection on unpublished murals. Printed Pages: 135. Bookseller Inventory # 1051
