About this Item: Reynal & Hitchcock, Inc., New York, 1934. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Illustrated by Mary Shepard (illustrator). 1st Edition. 1934 First American edition, first printing (same year as the London first) in a LATER Harcourt, Brace & World trade dust jacket. The book is "Very good" with some rub to spine ends, and bears a Valentine's (February), 1935, gift inscription to the half-title page. The lovely, near-fine, yellow-on-red dust jacket is priced $3.50, cites 1952 reviews for the fourth book in the series ("Mary Poppins In The Park,") and lists publisher's address as 757 Third Ave., New York 17, N.Y. -- pre-dating the 1963 adoption of zip codes. As Harcourt, Brace merged with the World Book Co. in 1960, jacket could thus be from any of the three years 1960-1962. Small bookseller's label to FFE indicates this copy was originally purchased from The Personal Book Shop, 101 St. James Ave., Boston, Mass. A children's book with a gentle touch of magic and fantasy, the tone of which was somewhat overpowered in Disney's conversion of the material into the broad & booming 1964 Julie Andrews-Dick Van Dyke musical. (The film was universally well reviewed, but Travers -- retained as an adviser to the production -- disapproved of the dilution of the harsher aspects of Mary Poppins' character, felt ambivalent about the music, and so hated the use of animation that she ruled out any further adaptations of her later Poppins novels. The relationship between Travers and Disney is detailed in "Mary Poppins She Wrote," a biography of Travers by Valerie Lawson. 206 pp. This 1934 U.S. first edition in early 1960s dust jacket now reduced from $485. About this Item: Reynal & Hitchcock, Inc., New York, 1934. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrated by Mary Shepard (illustrator). 1st Edition. First American edition, first printing (same year as the London first.) "Very good" with minor rub to corners and a pair of small bangs to top edges of both boards. Small smudges of blue ink to illustrated front endpapers, only. Small bookseller's label to rear pastedown indicates this copy was originally purchased from the J.W. Robinson Co., Seventh & Grand, Los Angeles. (The Robinson's headquarters store was open 1915-1991.) A children's book with a gentle touch of magic and fantasy, the tone of which was somewhat overpowered in Disney's conversion of the material into the broad & booming 1964 Julie Andrews-Dick Van Dyke musical. This copy came to us with a facsimile dust jacket, the manufacturers of which do at least identify it as such to bottom of front flap. While we generally refrain from offering these things, which can confuse the unwary, our final scan here is of said FACSIMILE REPRODUCTION dust jacket, as received, which we will enclose at no extra charge if desired. 206 pp. Reduced from $385.
