SIXTH BIBLIA RABBINICA]. Biblia Sacra Hebraica &: Buxtorf, Johannes (ed.)

About this Item: L. Koenig/ Johannis König, Basel, 1619. Hardcover. Condition: g to g+. Folios. Vol.1: [6 unpaginated leaves] + 705 leaves. Vol.2: 707- 946 leaves, 7, [1], 67. [8 unpaginated leaves] + 108pp. Full brown leather boards with blind-stamped tooling, re-backed with the original spines laid down. Spines with elaborate gilt and blind-stamped tooling, gilt lettering over labels and raised bands. Reinforced corners. Marbled edges. Illustrated title pages and divisional titles, bordered with woodcut engravings. The work is the sixth version of the "Biblia Rabbinica". Starting with the first version published by Daniel Bomberg in 1517, these Rabbinic Bibles represent the earliest printings of the full text of the Hebrew Bible according the Rabbinic tradition with marginal commentaries by scholars in Aramaic and Hebrew and chapter and verse numbers printed on the pages. With Bomburg's second version (1524) the full authoritative Masoretic text with revisions and corrections, by Jacob ben Hayyim ibn Adonijah, standardized the form and layout on which all subsewquent editions of Rabbinic Bibles (Mikrot Gedolot) are based. In this version, commentaries include, for the Pentatuch, Rashi and Ibn Ezra, and for the Nevi'im (Prophets) and Ketuvim (Writings) sections, Rashi and Radak (in Rashi Script). The text of this sixth version of the Biblia Rabbinica, follows the content of the third version, restoring the material that was expurgated by the Inquisition from the fifth version.Bound in at the back (front from Latin orientation) of the second volume, supplementing the text, is the 1665 improved and enlarged edition of Johannes Buxtorf's treatise on diacriticals in the biblical text, "Tiberias, sive Commentarius Masoreticus" (originally published in 1620). This edition was edited by Buxtorf's son, Johannes Buxtorf the Younger. While various permutations of the edition exist, this is one of the copies of the book that was issued only in Hebrew, with no Latin titles or preface. The first volume starts with the author's notes, a preface and a table of contents. Each book starts with divisional titles featuring the first words of the books in Hebrew, in beautifully printed large type-fonts bordered with lovely woodcut floral motifs and further encircled by multiple layers of textual commentary in Hebrew, reading counterclockwise. In vol.2 following the text of the Ketuvim (Writings) section, is the Targum Yerushalmi ("Jerusalem Targum") also known as the Targum Pseudo-Jonathan, followed by sections of additional Masoretic commentaries, scholarly Rabbinic notes and indexes in Hebrew. Illustrated and historiated endpieces at the end of each minor book division. The work contains four Hebrew title pages, including the general title and 3 divisional titles. Text in Hebrew. Text of the Tiberias in Latin with some Hebrew.Bindings with some scratches to the covers and spines. Some rubbing to extremities and along edges. Interior with some age toning, damp staining and light foxing throughout. Book blocks tight. Bindings and interiors in good to good+ condition overall. *Johannes Buxtorf (1564 - 1629) was a celebrated and highly influential Christian Hebraist and biblical scholar who served as professor of Hebrew for thirty nine years at the University of Basel. His works include explorations of Judaism, Jewish customs, Hebrew language, the bible, and Rabbinic literature. His son Johannes Buxtorf the Younger, was also an acclaimed Hebraicist.*Darlow & Mule #5120. Seller Inventory # 42942
