X, 374pp. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over gilt and black stamped burgundy cloth, with gold lettering to spine and front cover. Front free endpaper signed by the author, and inscribed by previous owner. First edition of J. Edgar Hoover's anti-communist magnum opus, signed by him on front free endpaper. On publication, Hoover's "Masters of Deceit" was praised as "the most authoritative book on communism ever written in America" (New York Times). Written at the height of the Cold War, the work is described by Hoover in his foreword as "an attempt to explain communism - what it is, how it works, what its aims are, and, most important of all, what we need to know to combat it."Previous owner's gift inscription on front free endpaper (Hester Cunningham Williams from William E.
