No dust jacket. x + 696 pp. with all sorts of bw charts, line drawings, musical notation, formulae, and a few bw photos. Groundbreaking study by the Ukrainian-American composer and theoriest Joseph Schillinger (1895-1943), who presents here nothing less than a "scientific theory of the arts" that influenced musicians such as George Gershwin, Burt Bacharach, Earle Brown, and Henry Cowell, and constitutes a crucial text for the history and theory of art in the 20th century. Schillinger accredited a small group of students as qualified teachers of the System and after his death, one of them, Lawrence Berk, founded a music school in Boston to continue the dissemination of the System. Schillinger House opened in 1945 and later became the Berklee College of Music, where the System survived in the curriculum until the 1960s. Topics: art, music, theory, algorithmic art, systems art.
