Item Description: Julius Springer, Berlin, 1925. Hardcover. Book Condition: g to g+. First German edition. Quarto. XIV, 377, [1]pp (Text), [4]pp (Publisher's advertisement). Original orange cloth, with black lettering on spine and front cover. Publisher's logo at tail of spine and on title page. First German edition of Sir Arthur Eddington's masterpiece in which he formulates mathematically his conception of the world of physics derived from the theory of relativity. The argument is developed in a form which throws light on the origin and significance of the great laws of physics; its consequences are followed to the full extent in the consideration of gravitation, relativity, mechanics, space-time, electromagnetic phenomena and world geometry. Some rubbing and soiling to binding. Front hinge slightly starting. Text in German. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in good to very good condition. About the author: Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882 -1944) was a British astronomer, physicist, and mathematician of the early 20th century who did his greatest work in astrophysics. He was also a philosopher of science and a popularizer of science. The Eddington limit, the natural limit to the luminosity of stars, or the radiation generated by accretion onto a compact object, is named in his honor. He is famous for his work regarding the theory of relativity. Eddington wrote a number of articles that announced and explained Einstein's theory of general relativity to the English-speaking world. World War I severed many lines of scientific communication and new developments in German science were not well known in England. He also conducted an expedition to observe the Solar eclipse of 29 May 1919 that provided one of the earliest confirmations of relativity, and he became known for his popular expositions and interpretations of the theory. Item Description: Foreword by C. L. Norton. Cambridge, Mass.: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1927, 1927. , stated First Edition, x, 102pp., very good blue cloth, offsetting on endpapers Lectures delivered at MIT in the spring term, 1926. Belgian pioneer in irreversible thermodynamics, whose university career began only in his 40s. Prigogine's Nobel Prize autobiography recalls De Donder's attention to entropy as the beginning of the Brussels school of thermodynamics: "the usual approach was to limit the study of thermodynamics to the understanding of equilibrium laws" rather than the supposedly "transitory" phenomena. Prigogine followed De Donder and others in this direction, even against strong resistance in the mid-1940s. Fortunately, he was supported by Edmond Bauer and Hendrik Kramers, among others. Item Description: Cambridge: University Press, 1923., 1923. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition. ix, 247, [1] pp. Original cloth, large 8vo. Very Good. 'In 1923 came Eddington's great book, Mathematical Theory of Relativity. Einstein said in 1954 that he considered this book the finest presentation of the subject in any language, and of its author he said, 'He was one of the first to recognize that the displacement field was the most important concept of general relativity theory, for this concept allowed us to do without the inertial system.' In this book Eddington gave the substance of the original papers of Einstein, deSitter, and Weyl but departed from their presentations to give a 'continuous chain of deduction,' including many contributions of his own, both in interpretation and in derivation of equations. With intuitive brilliance he modified Weyl's affine geometry of world structure by means of a new mathematical procedure, parallel displacement, which in itself was a not unimportant contribution to geometry' (D.S.B. IV: 281). Bookseller Inventory # 05686
