About this Item: London: A. Mearn et al., 1684, 1684. Condition: Used - Very Good. A4, a-c4, B-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Hhh4, Aaaa-Zzzz4, Aaaaa-Zzzzz4, Aaaaaa-Ffffff4, A-Z2, Aa2, *5, Nnnnnn-Zzzzzz4, 7A-7R4, *1-*92. Lacks portrait frontispiece. Bound in recent three-quarter crimson leather, over cloth boards. Generally somewhat browned and edgeworn internally, with some insect damage in the bottom margin, but still quite clear and legible. There is a break in the pagination at p. 424 (Hhh4); numbering skips to p. 451 (Aaaa). Another copy in our hands has identical pagination, and the text is continuous, so this is clearly a printer's error in page numbering. Overall, a very sound copy, lacking frontispice and with the defective page numbering noted above. Seller Inventory # S23353

About this Item: Parisiis, Apud viduam Guillielmi Pele, 1644. Printer's mark+ engraved print of Matthew Paris + a few engravings in the text + some small vignettes. Leather. Gr. 6to. (XXVIII), 680, (116), (XII), 215, (9) pp. *spine on the right side damaged, edges covers slightly damaged, otherwise good condition* 'Matthew Paris (d. 1259?) is commonly regarded as England's greatest medieval historian. The 'Historia Anglorum', begun in 1250, is an abridgement, concentrating on English history, of the 'Chronica Majora', but it also includes some additional material for the period A.D. 1067-1253. Matthew Paris became a monk of St. Albans in 1217, and succeeded Roger Wendover as historiographer of that abbey in 1236. He drew his information from many documentary sources including papal bulls and royal letters and from conversations with eye-witnesses of the events narrated. (.) His style is graphic; his view is broad; and his opinions are expressed with fervour. He condems what he regarded as abuses of the court and church; he rebukes pope, king, nobles, and clergy, when he deems them worthy of blame. Matthew was a man of many interests and attainments'. E. Graves. A bibliography of English history to 1485. Oxford, 1975, 2941. Seller Inventory # [#590810]
