Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Edward Moxon, Dover Street, 1855. First Edition. Small Octavo. 154 pages. The first edition. Tennyson published Maud, and Other Poems. Notable among the other poems was 'The Charge of the Light Brigade', the last poem at the end of the book. Bound in either pig skin or vellum with ornate gilt decoration with the initials E.V.B. on the front cover. She pages do have some light spotting and some light marks. The binding has light wear along the edges and the front inner hinge is cracked, else very good. Size 18 x 11cm (7 x 4.5 inches) The binding although well done has a crude finish, more obvious on the inside at the end papers. Would Eleanor Vera Boyle make this binding? She was artistic and had time on her hands. She could afford to get a professional book binder to bind her books, she was married to the chaplain of Queen Victoria and was a daughter to an earl, she was wealthy. She also illustrated a book by Tennyson The May Queen in 1861, she must have met Tennyson in her small circle of artist friends. The last poem The charge of the Light Brigade was at Balaklava in the Crimea, had taken place on 25 October. Tennyson's periodical publication in The Examiner (9 Dec 1854) had stirred not only the nation but the troops to whom copies were sent. This poem of Maud or the Madness is a little Hamlet, the history of a morbid, poetic soul, under the blighting influence of a recklessly speculative age. The peculiarity of this poem is that different phases of passion in one person take the place of different characters.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 17 x 14.5 cm. 154 pp. Fine contemporary binding in full leather with blind stamped patterning front and rear with gilt margins and decoration and five raised bands; light abrasion to corners and extremes but without damage. Gilt to all edges and yellow end papers. Slight beginning to front gutter. Neat gift inscription dated 1855 to FEP. Entirely clean throughout with firm binding and ribbon still intact. 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' herein in its first appearance. No adverts within indicating true first edition in what is clearly a deluxe incarnation.
First Edition. Publisher's cloth; very good or a little better; bookplate; custom quarter-morocco slipcase with chemise. Among the 'Other Poems' is his most famous work, 'The Charge of the Light Brigade.' This event inspired two very different film versions; a fanciful, romantic tale which starred Errol Flynn, and a grimmer, realistic one based on the account in the excellent The Reason Why by Cecil Woodham-Smith, whose authoritative work on the Irish famine, The Great Hunger, shared some principals. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
